Counting Techniques
B. Permutation
Permutation may be defined as an
arrangement of a number of objects in a
definite or specific order.
B. Permutation
1. The number of permutations of n
different objects taken r at a time, when
none of the objects is to be repeated in
any arrangement is;
Example 1: How many ways can the first prize,
the second prize, and the third prize be awarded
to ten entries in an essay contest?
B. Permutation
2. The number of permutations of n
different objects taken r at a time, when
each object can be repeated any
number of times in an arrangement:
Example 2: In how many ways can five prizes be
awarded to four contestants if each contestant is
eligible for all the prizes?
B. Permutation
3. The number of permutations of n
distinct objects taken all at a time.
Example 3: In how many ways can 5 different
books be arranged on a shelf?
B. Permutation
4. Circular Permutation. The
number of permutations of n distinct
objects arranged in a circle is:
Example 4: In how many ways can 30 beads be
strung to form a necklace?
B. Permutation
5. The number of permutations of n
different objects taken r at a time, when
r are alike and the other are all distinct.
Example 5: How many permutations are there
of the letters in the word “BATAAN”?
B. Permutation
6. The number permutations of n
objects all at a time when r objects are
alike, another r, are also alike, and so
on and the rest are all distinct.
Example 6: How many permutations are there
of the letters in the word “Mississippi”?
PRACTICE EXERCISES
Solve the following problems:
1. If there are only 4 available seats in a certain auditorium
and six people arrived late, in how many ways can they
occupy the seats while hearing the seminar?
2. How many different ways can the letters of the word
CONSTITUTION be arranged?
3. In how many ways can 6 awards be given to 5 films if each
film is entitled for all the awards ?
4. Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, together with 3
lawyers of each prosecution panel and defense, are to be
seated at a round table. In how many ways can they
position themselves;
