Sports in Malaysia are an important part of Malaysian culture.
Sports in Malaysia are popular from both the participation and
spectating aspect. Malaysians from different walks of life join in
a wide variety of sports for recreation as well as for competition.
In the broadest definition of sports—physical exercise of all sorts
—the four most popular recreational sports among the general
population of Malaysia are exercise walking, aerobic exercise,
strength training, and running. Other most popular sports are
bicycling, swimming, climbing, camping, bowling, hiking, and
fishing.
1. Football

Football is a very popular sport, not just in Malaysia but the whole
world! Millions celebrate The World Cup every 4 years and
Malaysians always wonder when we’ll make it into the
International Tournament. It’s one of the biggest sports in the
world, after all, beating basketball or even ice skating.
In 2018,
almost half the world’s population tuned in to watch the World C
up
held in Russia. It was unfortunate that Malaysia’s National
Football Team didn’t qualify. Still, many
Malaysians enjoyed watching their favourite
International players dominate the playing field.
2. Badminton

Badminton, is thriving! Even Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin

said that badminton is now the first one of Malaysia Sport.
Badminton legends like
Datuk Lee Chong Wei is as beloved as the sport itself. He’s one
of the Sports Icons that helped badminton become one of
Malaysia’s National Sports.
Plus, there’s more familiarity to Badminton than Football since
our main competition comes from our Asian neighbors like
Indonesia, China and South Korea . This gives a more local feel
that isn’t found in football.
3. Sepak Takraw

Sepak Takraw is the Official National Sport in Malaysia. But it’s

origins can be found from all over Southeast Asia, like Thailand
and the Philippines. Sepak Takraw comes off as a variation of the
Western Sport Volleyball, where instead of using hands, Sepak
Takraw players can use any part of their bodies except for their
lower arms and said hands. This makes for a cool-looking
athletic sport that’s a bit more on the acrobatic side. You’ll often
see players diving to catch and jumping to hit the fast rattan ball.
4. Rugby

Historically, Rugby as a sport originated from football. Back in

the early days when the Englishmen were just starting to make
the standard rules for football, others argued that two rules
should be removed from the game entirely. The first is
that running with the ball in hand should be allowed. The
second is that hacking or kicking an opponent in the legs to
topple the player who has the ball should also be allowed. When
they proposed that these two rules be removed, the others
broke from the association entirely and created their own
sport: Rugby! And thus one of the popular sports in Malaysia
was born.
5. Hoki

A lot of Malaysians love to watch Hoki or more popularly known

as Field Hockey. In fact, Malaysia is one of the founding
members of the Asian Hockey Federation. Malaysia has its own
National Hockey Team and even has their own field hockey
league competition for clubs called the Malaysia Hockey League
or MHL. Malaysians are actually good at playing this sport,
seeing as the men’s hockey team is ranked 13th in the world and
3rd in Asia. The women’s team, on the other hand, is ranked 22
in the world and 5th in Asia.
Sport is the best way to be involved in physical activities.
Moreover, it is great to go in for sports starting from early
childhood on a regular basis. People involved in sports gain
additional strength and improve health greatly. In addition, it
serves as the best method to keep yourself in good shape. You
can improve your health, team building, and communication
skills greatly when participating in various sports competitions,
including Olympic games. You can test your luck and the power
of your desire to win as well. Sports improve our lives
significantly and make us stronger and cleverer. Going in for
sports and participating in various sports competitions are the
best habits any person can have nowadays.
