Dengue Fever (DF)

 An acute febrile viral disease.

 One of the most important emerging public
health problem.
 Clinical Type: dengue fever, dengue
haemorrhagic fever (DHF) & dengue shock
syndrome (DSS)
 The most common vector-borne arboviral
infections in the tropics and subtropics.
boyd
The term
“CHIKUNGUNYA”
is derived from the
Makonde word meaning
"that which bends up" in
reference to the stooped
posture developed as a
result of the arthritic
symptoms of the disease.

boyd
 In May 2015, the Pan American
Health Organization (PAHO) issued
an alert regarding the first confirmed
Zika virus infection in Brazil.
 The outbreak in Brazil led to reports
of pregnant women giving birth to
babies with birth defects and poor
pregnancy outcomes.

boyd
 Zika is primarily transmitted through
the bite of infected Aedes
mosquitoes.
 It can also be transmitted from a
pregnant mother to her baby during
pregnancy or around the time of
birth.
 The most common symptoms of Zika
are fever, rash, joint pain, and
conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness
is usually mild with symptoms
lasting for several days to a week.

boyd
Risk Factors Reported for DHF
 Virus strain
 Pre-existing anti-dengue antibody
• Previous infection
• Maternal antibodies in infants
 Age
 Higher risks in secondary infections
 Higher risks in locations with two or more
serotypes circulating simultaneously at high
levels
 High Aedes mosquito population
