Blaise Pascal

June 19,1623-August 19, 1662


Pascal’s Life
 Blaise pascal was born on june 19,1623 in
Clermont-Ferrand,puy-de-dome, France and
died on August 19, 1662 in paris. Pascal’s
mother died when he was three and he was
raised and educated by his mathematician
father Ettiene.
 Pascal died of abdominal problems and his

last words were “ may God never abandon


me”.
 In one of his famous books, he says “if God
does not exist, one stands to lose nothing by
believing in him anyway, whereas if he does
exist, one stands to lose everything by not
believing” which is said to be his motto.
Pascal’s Triangle
 A geometric arrangement of binomial
coefficients in a triangular shape.
 It is an array of numbers.
Pascal’s Calculator
 The first mechanical calculator was invented
by Blaise Pascal.
 It was for assisting his father’s workload as a

tax commissioner.
 It is the basis for today’s calculators and

computer historians recognize his


contribution to their field.

Major Contribution
 He invented mechanical calculator known as
Pascal’s calculator or Pascalines. It was
primarily an adding machine which could add
and subtract two numbers directly although
the device was also capable to do multiply
and divide by repetition.
