OUTLINE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
• Electronic communication refers to any data,
information, words, photos, emojis and symbols that are
sent electronically to one or more people.(Siyavula)
• Electronic mail and electronic communications systems
are considered significant and effective tools of
communication.( T. Kozík, J. Slivová, 2014)
• Electronic communication (or e-communication) is the
preferred way of communication.
• The new rules of etiquette have been stabilized into a
term NETIQUETTE. The word netiquette was created by
combining words NET (net) and ETIKETA (a set of rules
of social behavior and habits).
• Netiquette rules have emerged to facilitate online
interactions in the absence of visual and auditory cues,
which can often be sources of misunderstandings, as
readers can easily misinterpret messages (Marx, 2004).
• Netiquette is a set of rules that encourages appropriate
online behavior related to the social and cultural norms of
a community (Preece, 2004).
• The rules of etiquette that apply when communicating
online are different from those that apply when
communicating in person. It cannot be assumed that
students automatically know how to communicate in an
online environment.(Marx, 2004)
• Noncompliance of netiquette rule use can be interpreted as a sign
of disrespect (Shapiro & Anderson, 1985)
• High school serves as a training ground for students
• High school teaches students values like collaboration, respect
etc.
• Interaction using online netiquette promotes a safe, engaging,
respectful, and collaborative group where diversity of opinion is
valued (Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology, UBC, n.d.;
Educational Technology and Mobile Learning, 2014).
• The researcher decided to conduct an investigation on the
knowledge and attitude towards online netiquette of high school
students in Mandaue City Comprehensive national High School.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
• To assess the level of knowledge of students towards
the principles of online netiquette
• To determine the attitude of students in observing online
netiquette
• To identify the relationship between the demographic
profile(age and grade level) of the students and their
knowledge and attitude on online netiquette
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
• 1. Students
• 2. Teacher

Research Design
A descriptive research design is applied by using the semi-structured survey questionnaire for the
purpose of collecting data on assessing the knowledge of students towards online netiquette.
Research Environment
In the Annex campus of Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School will be the starting
point of gathering the data.
