General Mathematics: Operations On Functions

This document discusses operations on functions, including addition and subtraction. It provides examples of adding and subtracting different functions, such as (g+f)(x) = g(x) + f(x). Rules for adding and subtracting signs and fractions are also outlined. Examples are provided to demonstrate adding and subtracting functions represented by equations, as well as word problems involving functions. Students are expected to learn how to perform addition and subtraction on functions and represent real-life situations using operations on functions.

1
Desired Learning Outcomes :
After the discussion, the students
would be able to:
• perform addition and subtraction of functions,
and
• represent real-life situation using operations of

functions.

2
Rules of sign of addition and
subtraction:
1. -1-1= -2 If the numbers have the same
signs then add the number and
copy the sign.

2. 1- -1= 2 If there are two negative

signs between the two
numbers, it will become
positive.
3. 1-1= 0
4. 1+1 = 2
3
4
Example a.
 (g+f)(x)= g(x) + f(x)
Definition of sum of
functions.
Add g(x) and f(x).
Combine like terms.

5
Example b.
 (h+g)(x)= h(x)+g(x)

6
Example c.
 (h+f)(x)= h(x)+f(x)

7
Example d.
 (g-h)(x)= g(x)-h(x) Definition of the difference of
functions.
Subtract g(x) and h(x).
Perform the subtraction.
Combine like terms.

8
Example e.
 (h-g)(x)= h(x) - g(x)

9
Example f.
 (g-f)(x)= g(x) – f(x)

10
Example g.
 (h-f)(x)= h(x) – f(x)

11
Addition and Subtraction for
fractions:
 Find the least common denominator (LCD)
of both fractions.
 Rewrite the fractions as equivalent fractions
with the same LCD.
 The LCD is the denominator of the
resulting fraction.
 The sum or difference of the numerators is
the numerator of the resulting fraction.

12
Example h.
 (i+f)(x)= i(x) + f(x)

(x-1)(2x-1)

13
Example i. Word problem.
 What is the number of males in Barangay 127 t years since 2000
when f(t) represents the number of females in Barangay 127 t years
since 2000 and g(t) represents the number of people in Barangay 127
t years since 2000?

Solution:

g(t) – f(t), the number of people in

Barangay 127 minus the number of females in
Barangay 127 is equal to the number of males in
Barangay 127.

14
Example j.
 The function K(C) = C + 273.15 converts from degrees
Celsius into Kelvin. Complete the table below using this
formula.
K = C +273.15

Y = x + 273.15

x = Degrees Celsius -20 0 35 100

(input)
K(x) = Kelvin(output)
273.15     373.15
253.15 308.15
15
Activity 1.
 Find:
1. (a+d)(x)
2. (e+f)(x)
3. (b+c)(x)
4. (d-e)(x)
5. (a-f)(x)
6. (b+f)(x)
7. (c-b)(x)
8. (b+e)(x)
9. (a-d)(x)
10. (e-b)(x)

16
Activity 2.

X= Degrees Fahrenheit -4 32 95 212

(input)
C(x)= Degrees Celsius
(output)
