SEA WATER COOLING SYSTEM
FROM THE SEA SUCTION ONE OF A PAIR OF SEA-WATER CIRCULATING PUMPS PROVIDES
SEA WATER WHICH CIRCULATES THE LUBRICATING OIL COOLER, THE JACKET WATER
COOLER AND THE PISTON WATER COOLER BEFORE DISCHARGING OVERBOARD.
ANOTHER BRANCH OF THE SEA WATER MAIN PROVIDES SEA WATER TO DIRECTLY COOL
THE CHARGE AIR (FOR A DIRECT-DRIVE TWO-STROKE DIESEL).

THE UPPER SEA SUCTION VALVE IS USED WHILE IN PORT TO PREVENT ANY MUD OR
SAND ENTERING THE COOLING SYSTEM. ITS ALSO USED WHILE SAILING IN SHALLOW
WATERS. THE LOWER SEA SUCTION VALVE IS USED WHEN SAILING IN DEEP WATER TO
AVOID AIR ENTERING THE COOLING SYSTEM WHILE THE SHIP IS ROLLING OR PITCHING.

WATER AND ANTI-FREEZE THAT
HELPS TO STOP YOUR ENGINE
OVERHEATING
• THE COOLING WATER OF THE ENGINE SHOULD BE ONLY DEMINERALIZED
(DISTILLED) WATER WITH PROPER TREATMENT, WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR
KEEPING EFFECTIVE COOLING AND PREVENTING CORROSION OF THE SYSTEM.
THOUGH THE DISTILLED WATER MATCHES BEST TO THE REQUIREMENTS
FOR COOLING WATER, IT IS NECESSARY TO ADD CORROSION INHIBITOR.
BECAUSE UNTREATED DISTILLED WATER ABSORBS CARBON DIOXIDE FROM
THE AIR AND THEN BECOMES CORROSIVE.
WHY DO WE NEED TO DISTILLED?

• SEA WATER OR FRESH WATER CONTAMINATED BY SEA WATER EVEN IN SMALL


AMOUNT IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE USED AS COOLING WATER OF THE ENGINE
DUE TO HIGH RISK OF SEVERE CORROSION AND DEPOSITS FORMATION IN
THE SYSTEM. 
WHY DO WE NEED TO DISTILLED?

• RAINWATER IS HEAVILY CONTAMINATED AND HIGHLY CORROSIVE IN


GENERAL, WHICH IS ALSO NOT RECOMMENDED AS COOLING WATER. TAP
WATER (DRINKING WATER) IS NOT RECOMMENDED AS COOLING WATER DUE
TO RISK OF CHALK DEPOSIT FORMATION INSIDE THE COOLING SYSTEM.
HOWEVER, IF THE DISTILLED WATER, FOR EXAMPLE FROM FRESH WATER
GENERATOR, IS NOT AVAILABLE, TAP WATER MAY BE USED AS COOLING
WATER AFTER SOFTENING AND SOME OTHER TREATMENTS ACCORDING TO
THE INGREDIENTS.

PH LEVEL

• THE PH VALUES ABOVE 7 SIGNIFY ALKALINITY, PH VALUES LESS THAN 8.3, MOST
OF THE ALKALINITY IN THE WATER IS IN THE BICARBONATE FORM, AND SCALE
FORMATION IS NORMALLY NOT A PROBLEM. HOWEVER, WHEN THE PH RISES
ABOVE 8.3, THE ALKALINITY CONVERTS FROM THE BICARBONATE TO THE
CARBONATE AND THE SCALE WILL START TO FORM. YOU WANT TO KEEP THE
WATER ALKALINE, BUT NOT TOO ALKALINE. 10 OR 11 IS GREAT FOR BOILERS
WHERE SCALE INHIBITORS ARE ADDED TO WATER TREATMENT, BUT COOLING
WATER SHOULD BE IN THE 8 - 8.5 RANGE, NOT MORE THAN 9.
HARDNESS

• THE HARDNESS OF THE WATER INDICATES THE MINERAL CONTENT OF THE


WATER. THE RECOMMENDED VALUE FOR RAW WATER HARDNESS IS 178 MG/L
OF .
CHLORIDE CONTENT

• CHLORIDES - RECOMMENDED LIMIT MAX. 50 PPM. THE CHLORIDE VALUE OF


THE COOLING WATER SHOULD BE KEPT AS LOW AS POSSIBLE, ANY INCREASE IN
VALUE WHETHER SUDDEN OR GRADUAL, WILL BE AN INDICATION OF
SEA WATER CONTAMINATION.
SULPHATE CONTENT

• SULPHATES, SULPHIDES, HALIDES AND ESPECIALLY CHLORIDES ARE EXTREMELY


AGGRESSIVE (CORROSIVE) AGAINST IRON. IF THERE ARE HIGH AMOUNTS OF
THESE AGGRESSIVE IONS PRESENT IN THE COOLING WATER SYSTEM THE NITRITE
DOSAGE SHOULD BE INCREASE. THE RECOMMEND LIMIT MAX IS 100PPM
SILICATE CONTENT

• IN A COOLING SYSTEM, SILICATES OFFER METAL PARTS ( ESPECIALLY ALUMINUM ) A


HIGH LEVEL OF FAST ACTING PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION AND PITTING THAT
IS VITAL. THE RECOMMEND LIMIT MAX IS 150 PPM
