DEFINING AND UNDERSTANDING

• Listening is a receptive skill, a skill which requires learners to receive and understand information.

• People basically listen to gather information, but people listen for pleasure, to criticize, empathize and
assess.
LISTENING IN ACADEMIC

Academically, people listen to:

1) identify the general idea and specific information

2) know the detailed information

3) judge and make assessment

PRE-LISTENING
• Know the purpose of listening.

• Be prepared before listening.

• Look for clues of what you might be listening to.

• Prepare a skeleton or outline of what you might be listening to.


WHILE LISTENING
• Look for clues of the information you are listening to.

• Write down keywords or important information.

• Focus on the specific information or purpose of listening.

• Be focused.
POST-LISTENING
• Update and revise your notes, outline or mind map.

• Highlight important information.

• Respond to the required tasks or answer the questions.
