OET Reading Introduction

OET Reading
This module will introduce you to the OET Reading Test.
It provides information about the format of the Reading Test and what
the test is designed to assess. You'll learn about all the different question
types used in the Reading Test and there will be opportunities to practice
reading skills and test strategies that can help you perform as
successfully as possible.
Let's start with a few important basic facts about the test.
OET Reading: Important Facts
• The OET Reading Test is designed to assess how well you can you read
and comprehend a variety of authentic workplace and general
interest medical texts.
• The Test takes 60 minutes. During this time you will read and answer
the questions. You'll also need to write your answers on the answer
sheet while you are doing the test.
• The Reading Test is organised into three Parts, A, B and C, and each
part has quite different reading texts and a variety of task types.
• There are 42 questions in total in the reading test.
OET Reading: Question Types
There are 5 possible question types in the OET Reading test and it is useful to
consider the design and format of these tasks to improve your test performance. As
you work through this module you will learn about different types of questions and
actively practice reading strategies to answer them more effectively.
The question types, and parts of the OET test where they are used are shown
below:
• matching/finding information - Part A
• short answer question- Part A
• sentence completion - Part A
• note completion - Part A
• multiple choice - Part B (3-option), Part C (4-option)
OET Reading
• In the next section you will learn more about what to expect in the
OET Reading Test and complete a reading practice task that has all the
important information you need to know.
