SETTLEMENT OF PILES
Prepared by:
MC-LLOYD SARATE
Settlement of Piles
Se = Se1 + Se2 + Se3

Se1 = elastic settlement pile

Se2 = settlement of pile caused
by the load at the tip
Se3 = settlement of pile caused
by the load transmitted
along the pile shaft
Settlement of Piles
1.Elastic Settlement of Piles
Se1 = (Qwp + ξ Qws) L
Ap Ep
Qwp = load carried at the pile point
under working load condition
Qws = load carried by frictional (skin)
resistance under working load
condition
Ap = area of cross section of pile
Settlement of Piles
L = length of pile
Ep = modulus of elasticity of the pile
ξ = constant value depending of the unit friction
resistance distribution (f) along the pile shaft

ξ = 0.5 ξ = 0.5 ξ = 0.65

the Pile Tip
a) Se2 = qwp D (1 - µs2) Iwp

qwp = Qwp/Ap
Es = modulus of elasticity of soil at or below the pile point
µs = Poisson’s ratio of soil
Iwp =influence factor = 0.85
σwp = load carried at the pile point under working load condition
Settlement of Piles

Cp = an empirical coefficient
qp = ultimate point resistance of the pile
qp = C Nc
D = diameter or width of pile
