Transient Stability

Power System Stability
• It’s ability to return to normal or stable
operation after having been subjected to
some form of disturbance.
• Instability => is a condition denoting loss
of synchronism of synchronous machine.
Types of Stability
• Steady-State Stability.
• Dynamic Stability.
• Transient Stability.
Types of Stability
• Steady-State Stability.
o It’s related to a gradually increasing
load.
o It is basically concerned with the
determination of upper limit of
machine’s loading before losing
synchronism, provided the loading is
increased gradually at a slow rate.
Types of Stability
• Dynamic stability.
It involves the response to small
disturbances that occur on the system
producing an oscillations.
o Dynamically-stable: if the oscillations’
amplitude is limited & die out quickly.
o Dynamically-unstable: if these
oscillations continuously grow in
amplitude.
Types of Stability
• Transient stability
o Involves the response to a large
disturbance which may cause a large
change in  Rotor speed.
 Power angle.
 Power transfer (Load flow).

o It’s very fast phenomena usually occurring

within one second for a generator close to
the cause of disturbance.
