INSTANTANEOUS
OVERCURRENT
RELAY
Presented By: Shaira F. Sto. Tomas
Three Types of Operating Characteristics of Overcurrent Relay
[1] Instantaneous
[2] Definite Time
[3] Inverse-time
[1] Instantaneous Overcurrent Relay
o A relay that functions instantaneously on an excessive
value of current
o It operates as soon as the current gets higher than
the preset value
Working Principle
o It consist of current coil and moving
element. The magnetic effect
generated by the coil during normal
current is not sufficient to move the
moving element of relay.
o But when current increases, the
magnetic effect of the coil also
increases and moving element starts
moving to change the contact
position.
Instantaneous Curve (50)

Only current is adjustable

The Two Basic Settings of Overcurrent Relay According to ANSI
oTime Dial Setting
oPick-up Current Setting

Pick-up Current Setting

o The current for which the relay initiates its operation
o Pick-up Current = Plug Setting x Rated CT Secondary
Current
PSM (Plug Setting Multiplier)
PSM = Fault Current in Relay Coil / (Plug Setting x Rated
CT Secondary Current)
Example:
In a relay, plug setting is 150% and CT ratio is 500/10. If fault
current at relay is 80 Amp, find pick-up current and PSM.
Solution:
Pick-up Current = Plug Setting x Rated CT Secondary
= 150% x 10
= 15 Amp
PSM = Fault Current in Relay Coil / Pick-up Current
= 80/15
= 5.33
