Integers
• Integers are set of signed numbers. It is
composed of negative numbers, zero,
and positive numbers.

INCREASING
This only means that…
• Positive numbers are greater than 0 and negative numbers.
• Zero is greater than negative numbers.
• In comparing two negative numbers, the number nearer to zero has a
greater value.
• In comparing two positive numbers, the number farther from zero has a
greater value.
Absolute Value
• It is the distance of a number from 0 on
a number line. It is denoted by the
notation |n| (where n is the given
number).

|5|= ___

|-7|= ___7
Operations on
Integers
Addition of Integers
Like signs Examples:
• Add the absolute 5+4=9
value of the integers, -8 + (-7) = -15
then copy the common 12 + 22 = 34
sign.
-15 + (-23) = -38
Addition of Integers
Unlike signs Examples:
• Subtract the absolute -5 + 4 = -1
value of the numbers, 15 + (-7) = 8
then copy the sign of -22 + 22 = 0
the integer with higher
16 + (-23) = -7
absolute value.
Subtraction of Integers
To subtract integers, Examples:
change the sign of the
5–8=?
subtrahend to its
opposite. Then, proceed 5 + (-8) = -3
to the rules of addition Therefore,
of integers. 5 – 8 = -3
Subtraction of Integers
To subtract integers, Examples:
change the sign of the
-17 – (-5) = ?
subtrahend to its
opposite. Then, proceed -17 + (5) = -12
to the rules of addition Therefore,
of integers. -17 – (-5) = -12
Subtraction of Integers
To subtract integers, Examples:
change the sign of the
14 – (-8) = ?
subtrahend to its
opposite. Then, proceed 14 + (8) = 22
to the rules of addition Therefore,
of integers. 14 – (-8) = 22
Subtraction of Integers
To subtract integers, Examples:
change the sign of the
-3 – 10 = ?
subtrahend to its
opposite. Then, proceed -3 + (-10) = -13
to the rules of addition Therefore,
of integers. -3 – 10 = -13
Multiplication of Integers
Just multiply the numbers, then follow
these rules for the signs:
positive x positive= positive Examples:
negative x negative = positive
(6)(2) = 12
positive x negative = negative
(-3)(-5) = 15
negative x positive = negative
(4)(-7) = -28
(-9)(8) = -72
Division of Integers
Just divide the numbers, then follow these
rules for the signs:
positive ÷ positive= positive Examples:
negative ÷ negative = positive
6÷2=3
positive ÷ negative = negative
-8 ÷ (-4) = 2
negative ÷ positive = negative
18 ÷ (-3) = -6
-24 ÷ 6 = -4
