THIRD QUARTER: Force, Motion & Energy

Describing and Measuring Motion

Read and study the Overview on page 182
Imagine playing in the playground….

How do the kids make the objects move?

What makes things move or work?

Force!
Force is needed to make objects
move, work or even stop.
Force
-is a simple push or pull and in
nature produces many different
types of motion.

Motion
-change in position or movement of an
object with respect to its reference point
Laws of Motion
Lesson 1: Describing Motion
We are surrounded by moving
things and they move in variety of
ways.
Motion can be classified into:
1. Linear or Straight line Motion

2. Nonlinear or Curvilinear Motion

Imagine this scenario:
A conductor makes
signal and the bus
moves away from
the station.
In describing something that is moving, we
must compare it with something that is
assumed to be stationary or not moving.

That object used in the comparison is called the

REFERENCE POINT or FRAME OF REFERENCE
Reference Point
• Can we say that the bus is moving? Or did the
bus move?
Reference Point or Frame of Reference
is important in describing whether the
object is in motion or was in motion. It
tells us that object has changed
position-from its original position to
the last position travelling a certain
distance.
Take Note!
No frame of reference is more
correct than the others. However,
we can use landmarks and things
that do not move as our reference
point.
ACTIVITY 3.1: CHECKPOINT
Bring out a whole sheet of paper and follow the
example below:

ACTIVITY 3.1: CHECKPOINT
In not more than 3 sentences, answer the
following in your own words based form
the discussion: (5 points each-if definition is copied
somewhere maximum of 3 points only per item will be given)

1. Define Motion
2. Describe what is a Frame of Reference
3. Define Distance
Lesson 2: Measuring Distance Using
Standard Units
1. How do people know how far they
have travelled?
2. How will you know whether you
will need to ride a car to reach your
destination?
3. How are you going to get into a
certain place? What is the first thing
that you have to do?
Give examples how
measuring takes
place in daily life?
Review…
1.What is MOTION?
2.What is POSITION?
3.What is REFERENCE
POINT?
Distance…
--- it is the length of the PATH
between TWO POINTS.
First Point: Starting Point

Second Point: Ending Point

Measuring Lengths
& Distances
It is helpful to express distances in units that
are best suited to the motion you are
studying.
Scientists all over the world use the same
systems of units so they can communicate
informartion clearly.
International System
---System of MEASUREMENT called
INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS
or in FRENCH
Systeme International d’ Unites (SI)
International System
---it is a system based on the
number ten.

---SI unit of measuring

DISTANCE is METER (m)
Unit Conversion Table for Length
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 centimeters = 10 millimeters

Examples:
6 centimeters = 0.06 meter
2000 centimeters = 20 meters
Unit Conversion Table for Length
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 centimeters = 10 millimeters
Practice Exercises…
5 kilometer = _____ meters
7 meter = _____ centimeters
10 centimeters = _____millimeters
Review…
1. Define DISTANCE
-Distance between two points

2. What is the standard unit of

measurement used for distance?
-meter (m)
SI System of Measurement

-the standard unit of

measurement in
distance is METER (m)
Meter…
We just add the
prefix deca, hecto, &
kilo when the distance
is quite FAR.
Meter…
We add the prefix
deci, centi, & milli
when the distance is
quite SHORT.
I. Identification
1. It is the length of
a path between two
points.
2. What do you call
the system that is
based on the
number ten.
3. What do you call
the SI unit of
measuring distance?
4. What is the
symbol used in the
SI unit of measuring
distance?
5. What does “SI”
stand for in English?
Distance…
They say, measuring distances and
lengths are integral part of life…

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT?

Distance…
If YES, well and good…
If NOT, WHY?

ARE there something that we

CAN NOT measure?
Distance…
If there ARE, then what ARE those?

BLESSINGS!
GOD’S BLESSINGS!
May the good
Lord bless us all!
