Learning to be

By:Tomarong, Marvelyn
Toralba, Alona
Learning to be is one of the four pillars of education described
by Jacques Delors in report for UNESCO on Education in the
21st Century. The others are Learning to Live Together, Learning
to Know and Learning to Do. The formal curriculum usually
comprises the latter two with the first often left to chance.
So how can education help the next generation learn ways to
‘be’?.Here are just a few of the possibilitie.
Strengths based language - Children who hear messages about
themselves from people who are significant to them about their
value and qualities will try and live up to these expectations.
Modelling - Children watch how adults manage difficulties, they
hear conversations that give them ideas about what is important
in life, they observe how people treat others and they have
experiences that give them understanding of qualities such as
empathy, respect and fairness.
Social and emotional learning (SEL) - A good SEL program provides young
people with opportunities to reflect on major issues in their lives, talk with
others about alternative ways of being, tole play situations and use
creative ways to think through solutions to challenges.
The power of the positive - This includes the value of kindness,
collaboration, gratitude, equality and optimism. It also shows that sadness
is an important response to certain situations and that anger can be valid
when used constructively and humanely for social justice.
Service Learning - Many young people learn a different way to be when
they find themselves working in the service of others and reflecting on
what they are learning. Because of the benefits in helping students develop
a positive sense of self, some schools now incorporate service learning as
part of the curriculum, and it forms part of the International Baccalaureate.
Learning is the process of acquiring new understanding, knowledge,
behaviors, skills, values, attitudes, and preferences. The ability to learn is
possessed by humans, animals, and some machines; there is also evidence for
some kind of learning in certain plants. Some learning is immediate, induced
by a single event (e.g. being burned by a hot stove), but much skill and
knowledge accumulate from repeated experiences. The changes induced by
learning often last a lifetime, and it is hard to distinguish learned material that
seems to be "lost" from that which cannot be retrievedHuman learning starts
at birth (it might even start before and continues until death as a consequence
of ongoing interactions between people and their environment. The nature
and processes involved in learning are studied in many fields, including
educational psychology, neuropsychology, experimental psychology, and
pedagogy.

An Overview of the Four Pillars of Learning

Learning to Know
Learning to Know involves the acquisition and development of
knowledge and skills that are needed to function in the world.
Examples of skills under this pillar of learning include literacy,
numeracy, and critical thinkingLearning to Live Together
Learning to Live Together
Involves the development of social skills and values such as respect
and concern for others, social and inter-personal skills and an
appreciation of the diversity among people. These skills would
enable individuals and societies to live in peace and harmony.
Learning to Do
Learning to Do involves the acquisition of skills that would enable
individuals to effectively participate in the global economy and
society. These skills are often linked to occupational success, such
as vocational and technical skills, apprenticeships, and leadership
and management competencies.
Learning to Be
Involves activities that promote holistic personal development
(body, mind and spirit), for an all-round ‘complete person.’ These
include cultivating one’s self analytical and socials skills, creativity,
personal discovery and an appreciation of the inherent value
provided by these pursuits. An example under this pillar is a
teacher who participates in training workshops that will enhance
his/her knowledge and skills in the teachinglearning process.

Reflections
My reflection about this topic is that it helps the individual to
acquire the necessary skills through learning and knowledge so
that he can achieve his set goals. An important fact about
learning is that it is a means to improve knowledge and gain skills
that will help in reaching specific goal. Because learning new
things gives us a feeling of accomplishment which, in turn, boosts
our confidence in our own capabilities; you'll also feel more
ready to take on challenges and explore new business ventures.
And purpose of the four pillars at learning of the individual level
is to ensure the continuous growth of a person. At the societal
and global level, it educates the individuals as a part of society or
global village where they can develop social responsibility
necessary in building a better place to live.
-Tomarong, Marvelyn
Learning to be to grow our personalities more effectively and
to act with ever-increasing independence, judgment, and
personal responsibility. Therefore, education must not
neglect the ability of any person: memory, logic, aesthetic
sense, physical abilities, and communication skills. The
development of knowledge at the expense of other learning
structures continues to be emphasized informal education,
but it is now important for education to be more systematic.

- Toralba, Alona
The topic entitled "Learning to be" it is focused on individuals skills
about on how to cultivate their knowledge. It shows personal
development of individuals that revealed thier creativity.
When we say learning it is usually happens to the person who
eager to learn. We all know we learn in different ways because we
have different experiences and different perceptions of life. That
we ourselves understand the qualities through to our observations
about what we see or hear just us to learn.
It's very important for us to learn because it will enhance or
improve our knowledge. It will be broaden our cognitive thinking
and create personal discovery.
