Scientific Method

Objective
 After this lesson, student should understand
 The scientific method

The scientific method
 The scientific method
 a systematic approach to the discovery of new inf
ormation

The scientific method
 Observation
 Hypothesis
 Prediction and testing
 Observation experimen

Observation:
 To explain our world, the first thing we have to do is look aroun
d us and see what’s there

Identify patterns:
 After observing a particular phenomenon over and over again
 being to get a sense of how nature
behaves
 to recognize patterns in nature

Hypothesis:
 A hypothesis is a tentative educated guess about how the
world works
 Can be formed after we have summarized experimental and obs
ervational results

Prediction and testing:

 Every hypothesis must be tested
 After making hypothesis, we can
started to design an experiment
to test what we guess

http://www.biorap.org/pix/photo_sungraph.gif
Testing (experiment)
 procedure
 the order of events in an experiment (steps)
 variable
 any factor that could influence the result
 Controlled experiment
 must have two set-ups that must differ
by only one variable
Conclusion:
 When an enough amount of data had been gra
bbed
 Try to identify specific pattern
 Proof the hypothesis previously made
 Generally elevate the theory to a new status
– Law of nature
 If conclusion cannot be
draw
 Refine the hypothesis and
experiment design
Remember~~
 The fact, concepts and theories which make up scient
ific knowledge are not permanent nor beyond dispute
 Any scientific theory is, to put it simply, the best expla
nation which scientists have produced up to the prese
nt
 Theories are not final, and certainly not true
 Old theories can be discarded
 New theories is invented, tested, discussed,
negotiated, refined and eventually accepted,
or rejected, by the scientific community

Data do not support
hypothesis – revise
or reject hypothesis

Results confirmed by other

scientists –
validate theory. Publication
Fun time~
