Nyquist-

Shannon
Sampling
Criterion
• Where and why do we use
Nyquist-Shannon sampling
criterion ?
• It is easier to analyse a
discrete time signal as
compared to continuous
time signal
• So, we can convert a
continuous time signal to
discrete time signal by
sampling theorem
• Now, after analysis, we
want to reconstruct the
original continuous time
signal
• It can be done by sampling
the signal
• What should be the frequency
and time period of the sampling
so that the original signal is
reconstructed accurately ?
• The sampling frequency must be
equal to or higher than twice the
frequency of the signal (Nyquist-
Shannon sampling criterion)
• Consider the signal in the figure
• If we want to reconstruct the
given signal, what should be the
sampling frequency ?
• The frequency of the given signal
is 1/6(because time period is 6)
• So, the sampling frequency should
be
• Fs ≥ 0.1667*2
