Collision Theory
 According to the collision theory of reactivity, reactions occur when reactant
molecules “effectively collide.”
 For an “effective collision” to occur, the reactant molecules must be oriented in space
correctly to facilitate the breaking and forming of bonds and the rearrangement of atoms
that result in the formation of product molecules

Collision Theory
Considering the entire reaction, the reaction results will be depending also on two things:
Amount of energy the particles have : the more energy they have, the more energy can
transfer during collision
Frequency of the collision : how often the particles collide, even the collision might be not
effective, but the more collision, the more successful it can results

Factors That Influence Reaction Rate
 The rates of chemical reaction are influence by
factors such as the (1) nature of the reactants, ( 2)
temperature , (3 ) concentration ,( 4) surface area,
and (5 ) the catalyst
 The effect of these factors will rely on the transfer of
amount of energy and the frequency of the collision.
Increasing either one of these will increase the rate of
reaction.
Factors That Influence Reaction Rate
 Nature Of The Reactants
o The nature of the reactants or its
reactivity depends on the ease with
which bonds are broken and new
ones are formed.
o There are those react faster and
more violently that others.
o Example : hydrogen reacts
violently with fluorine, but,
reaction of hydrogen and iodine is
extremely low.

Factors That Influence Reaction Rate
 Temperature
o At higher temperature,
molecules move faster.
o The faster the movement
of the reacting molecules ,
the greater the chance of
collision because they
may collide frequently.
o Based on Collision
Theory, the greater the
molecular collision, the Motion of particles under Cold
faster the reaction rate. and Hot environment

Factors That Influence Reaction Rate
 Surface Area
o In a solid, only surface
particles can interact
with the other reactants.
o If the solid is divided
into smaller pieces, then
there is greater surface
area; therefore, more
particles are able to react,
and the reaction rate Collision of Particle on Contact

Factors That Influence Reaction Rate
 Concentration
o Reaction rates can be increased if the
concentration of reactants is raised.
o An increase in concentration
produces more collisions. The chances
of an effective collision goes up with
the increase in concentration.
o For example, calcium carbonate
( CaCO3 ) deteriorates as a result of its
reaction with the pollutant sulfur
Bubbles result of strong and
dioxide. The rate of this reaction weak acid concentration
depends on the amount of sulfur
dioxide in the air. https://chemistrynotesblog.wordpress.com/2017/06/07/strong-and-weak-acids-have-different-reaction-rates/
Factors That Influence Reaction Rate

 Catalyst
o It is any substance that increases the
rate of a reaction without itself being
consumed.
o Enzymes are naturally occurring
catalysts responsible for many
essential biochemical reactions.
