Why do we classify
things?
CLASSIFICATION
Early scientists did not have photography or computers
to record and catalogue images of the curious new plants
and animals they discovered.
The relied on hand-drawn pictures and worded
descriptions.
These classification systems were developed to help
scientists communicate with each other despite their
different locations and languages.
CLASSIFY THESE ITEMS INTO GROUPS
Based on what you might ask? That’s up to you! Sort these 7 items into groups with the person
next to you. Name your groups.
HERE’S WHAT I CAME UP WITH!
Group One: Require Electricity to use Group Two: Require Fuel to use Group Three: Do not require
electricity or fuel to use
WHEN WE CLASSIFY, WE SHOULD BE
GROUPING TOGETHER THINGS WITH
SIMILARITIES

Think about this

statement above and talk
about some possible
issues with the way I
have classified some of
my objects.
WAS EVERYONE’S CLASSIFICATION
OF THE OBJECTS THE SAME?

Is this a good or
bad thing? Why?
THE LINNEAN
CLASSIFICATION
SYSTEM
SAY THAT OUT LOUD!

• Carl Linnaeus developed a classification

system that is still in use today!
• Simplified what already existed (which
was formed by Aristotle) as the words
were too long and too descriptive
• He created a system with single words
and seven groups to classify living
Carl things!
