Direct speech is what the speaker says. If we quote or imitate

directly what is being discussed without changing anything, it
is called a direct speech. So, the original words of the speaker
which is placed in quotation marks (“).
For example
Anna said, “I am happy today”
John said, “I cleaned the car yesterday”
He said “I will call you tomorrow”
What is Indirect Speech?
Indirect speech is not the original words of the speaker. So, the
words stated by someone other to explain the thought of the
original speaker. In indirect speech we do not use quotation marks.
instead we use the conjunction "that" and state the sentence by
changing its tense.
For example
Anna said (that) she was happy that day.
John said (that) he had cleaned the car the day before.
He said (that) he would call me the next day.
