Career

Development
When we speak being productive, the first thing come in our
mind is work and occupation. But lets speak more of vocation
rather than career.
A vocation is about doing what you love to do and employing
your knowledge, inherent skills and personal traits you want to
fulfill.
A career is a profession that a person may get into either
because he found a good match between his life goals, skills,
personality and interests with a dream job.
Career selection among
Filipinos
 Padre de familia selected the courses each of his children would
take up. Among the first roster are medicine, law, accounting,
engineering and education.
 The illusion of good paying job and quick employment has
pushed many parents and students to pursue college that often
times are not consonance with their interests skills and passion.

sectors have discussed mismatch job what
skills college graduates learn in school versus
the skills needed in workplace.
Technical and Vocational Courses

 Filipinos stay away from this kind of

non-diploma courses because they usually
perceived as inferior, low-paying and
often associated with manual labor.
Career Development
Theories
Trait factor- developed by Frank Parson and
E.G Williamson. Skills, values and interests
and personality characteristics are analyzed
and matched with job factors and occupational
profile.
Career Development
Theories
 Psychological- developed by John Holland. He identified six
personality categories: REALISTIC, INVESTIGATIVE,
SOCIAL, CONVENTIONAL, ENTERPRISING AND
ARTISTIC. A person usually made up all six personality
categories, but have a dominant personality. Ex. A student says he
is interested in pol.sci. but would also like to design clothes.
Career Development Theories

 Decision- based on Albert Bandura’s

Theory of self-efficacy, which means
person may exercise control over his
thoughts, beliefs and actions.
Career Development
Theories
 Developmental or the life-span theory-
proposed by Donald Super who based the theory
on the idea that humans are always in constant
change and go through life learning and doing new
things while changing roles in the process.
But always bear in your mind that there is no
particular theory that explain everything about
career development. The challenge to us is to
develop our own approach and methodology in
finding out career choices.
Internal factors affecting one’s choice of

What’s the difference between a job, career
and an occupation?
 The words career, job, and occupation are often used
interchangeably. To be specific, a job is what you show up to
for work; a career spans your lifetime and includes your
education, training, professional memberships, volunteering and
your full history of paid work. An occupation describes a type
of work with associated tasks, education and training, typical
wages, work settings, and more.
 For example, you may choose to get trained for
the occupation “registered nurse”. Then apply for
a job as an emergency room nurse at your local
hospital. After several years, your career might
include that experience in the ER, as well as jobs in
pediatrics, patient education, and cardiac
rehabilitation.
