WHAT THE FUTURE

HOLDS?
By: Riana Kresna
Let’s talk about the Future!

Beside being able to talk about your Daily Routine and your Past Experience, you also have
to be able to talk about your Future Plans.

There are some ways to talk about Intention or Future Plans:

1. Use BE GOING TO
2. Use THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS/PROGRESSIVE
3. Use WILL
USE ‘BE GOING TO’

1. We use BE GOING TO to talk about intention or future plans.

Subject + to be (am, is, are) + going to + base form/adverbial of place

A: What is Josh going to study at college?

B: He is going to study chemistry.
(it means that Josh has decided long before that he is going to study
chemistry at college. It could also mean that Josh has prepared
everything to enter the college.)
A : What are you going to do next month?
B : I am going to Jakarta next month.
(When B says that he is going to Jakarta next month it means that
he has set the time of leaving and he has the ticket to Jakarta)
2. We also use BE GOING TO for predictions (guesses about the future)
especially when there is evidence that something is just about to happen.

 Be careful! That glass is going to fall!

 It’s cloudy. I think it is going to rain this afternoon.
USE THE PRESENT
CONTINUOUS/PROGRESSIVE
1. We can use THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS to talk about intentions or future
plans. A future time expressions is usually used with it such as Tomorrow,
next week, this summer, this afternoon, etc.

Subject + to be (am, is, are) + Verb-ing

A : What are you doing tomorrow?

B : I’m having lunch with friends. Then we are going to a movie.
2. we use THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS to refer to more definite plans than
BE GOING TO.

I am leaving for Jakarta at 03:45 pm tomorrow afternoon.

The students are working in the workshop at 07:30 am tomorrow morning.
USE WILL

1. We use WILL to make predictions (guesses about the future).

Subject + will + base form (V1)

 Electric cars will become popular in the next ten years.

 They will probably win the championship.
2. We use WILL to express a quick decision made at the time of speaking
such as offer a help.

A: I’m so thirsty.
B : I will buy you drink.

A : Someone is at the door.

B : I will open the door.
3. We use WILL to express a promise.

A : Chris, please clean your room.

B : I will clean it later Mom. I promise.

A : John, remember to return my book.

B : I will return it tomorrow. I promise.
