TOPIC: Citing main idea and supporting
details
STRAND: Comprehension
Objectives: Students should be able to:
1. summarize important ideas and cite supporting
details.
ENGAGE, EXPLAIN - Teacher will access
student’s prior knowledge.
Students will be shown a paragraph on Citrus Fruits. In
the paragraph, different sentences will be colour coded.
Students will read paragraph and try to explain why the
paragraph is colour coded and what the colours in the
paragraph represent.
What does the sentence in red represent?
What do the sentences in yellow represent?
 Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits have many uses. Many citrus fruits
are good for eating when they are ripe. Oranges
are usually a favourite. Grapefruit is also popular
though it is not as sweet as oranges. Both
grapefruit and oranges are sources of vitamin C.
Although it has more acid than either orange or
grapefruit, lime squash makes a pleasant drink
and quenches our thirst, especially on hot days.
Lemons are often used as medicine and for
seasoning fresh meat and fish. Marmalades,
preserves, confectionery and perfumes are made
from various citrus fruits.
A discussion will follow in which students will be
reminded of main/important idea and supporting
details. They will then give their explanation of
main idea and supporting details.
EXPLORE- Students will
view/listen to a
video/audio clip about
the importance of
having a balanced diet.
EXPLAIN, ENGAGE
After video, students will be engaged in a
teacher-led discussion focused on getting
students to identify and understand the
main idea of the clip. Having identified the
main idea, students will say what they did
to identify it and create a strategy poster
outlining the strategy they used. Teacher
will then share a strategy poster with
students on how to identify the main idea
in a passage.
EXTEND, ENGAGE - As a whole group, students and teacher will
use a graphic organizer to map information from paragraph about Citrus Fruits.
