REVIEW
REPRODUCTION
• Is the capacity of all living things to give rise to new living
things.

EXTINCTION
• is the termination of a kind of organism or of a
group of kinds usually a species.
TWO BASIC TYPE OF REPRODUCTION

Sexual Asexual
The union of sex cells There is only one
from male and female
organisms are involved. parent, and no
can produce new individuals special reproductive
that are identical to or very cells or organs are
different from one another
involved
SELECTIVE BREEDING
Used to develop many types of plants and animals that have
desirable traits “Hybrid” are produced by selective breeding
these are types of plants and animals that have desirable traits

MATING
male & female join together to ensure fertilization; not
essential to Asexual reproduction
Sexual Reproduction in Animals
Involves gametes
Union of the two gametes during mating is called
fertilization
Zygote-The fertilized cell created
The zygote undergoes continuous divisions to
create a multicellular life form called the embryo
External fertilization occurs in most aquatic organisms,
mostly fish except sharks and rays. Fertilization takes
place directly in water. After the female parent releases
egg, the male parent swims and release its sperm in the
water to fertilize the eggs.

Internal fertilization Joining of sperm & egg inside the body

after mating and is common among higher forms of animals that
live on land like the giraffe, cat, and lion.
Asexual Reproduction in Animals
• Budding – small part of parent’s body grows into new organism. The
outgrowth is called “Buds”. Offspring's are Genetically identical
clones
• What is clone?- An exact copy of its parents
• Regeneration – parent separates into two or more pieces & each piece
forms new organism
• Parthenogenesis – growth & development of embryo
without fertilization by male
• Population all female (virgin birth)
VIVIPAROUS OVIPAROUS
• Viviparous Animals -Are those animals that give birth live
offspring they are also called livebearers.
Examples:Lion,Cat,Humans and most of the land animals
• Oviparous Animals Those animals which lay eggs are called
egg laying or oviparous.
• Examples are Alligator, Turtle, Fish, and Birds and most of the
insects
NATURAL VEGETATIVE
PROPAGATION

• This is a process by which structural modification are done

with stem, root, or leaf of an herbaceous or woody plant in
producing new plants.
• Vegetative Propagation by roots
• Vegetative Propagation by Stem
• Subaerial and Underground Stem
ARTIFICIAL VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION

These methods are used to improve the quality and productivity of

plants
1. CUTTING
Involves any vegetative part of a plants-stem, leaf, or root that is cut
and used to produce a new individual
2. LAYERING
A stem is bent over so part of it is covered with soil. After the covered
part forms roots, the new plant may be cut from the parent plant.
3.GRAFTING
This is one of the most widely used method of producing woody plants.
Two healthy stems from different plants are taken and put together.
FLOWERS
• Flowers are the reproductive
structures of plants. Their most
important function is to ensure
fertilization of the egg cell
within the ovule.
COMMON PARTS OF A FLOWER
• STAMEN AND PISTIL -two parts of a flower needed to make a seed
• The stamen and the pistil (also called carpel) comprise the essential
parts. They are the reproductive organs of the flower
• The pistil is the female reproductive structure. And it is made up of
three parts:
• The stigma
• The style
• The Ovary
The stamen is the male reproductive structure. It is composed of two
parts:
• The anther
• The filament
• Flowers also has accessory parts that
protect and support the essential parts.
These are the Petals and Sepals
• The petals and sepals form the floral
envelope of a flower
POLLINATION

•Pollination occurs when the pollen

grain of one flower reaches the
stigma of another flower
•Agent of pollination like Bees,
Butterfly and Wind helps this
process
