In 1887 , Heinrich Hertz generated

radio pulses in his laboratory to prove
Maxwell’s prediction that light is a
form of electromagnetic wave.

In his experiment , he used transmitter
made of two spherical electrodes
connected to an induction coil.The
electrodes are separated by a tiny gaps.

electrodes , was place several yards
away from the transmitter
● Voltage is supplied to the circuit

● When voltage is supplied to the circuit , current was induced in the
loop sending sparks across the gap
● The sparks move back and forth through the electrodes
● The radio puse was generated by the oscillating free charges in the
transmitter
● Sparks was induced in the receiver loop
● The radio pulses generated exhibit properties that are similar to light
waves such as interference,diffraction,reflection,refraction and
polarization
● They only differ in frequency and wavelength

Conclusions
● In his experiment , he was able to find the speed of electromagnetic
waves which is also the same with light
● Electromagnetic waves can be reflected,refracted and diffracted.

SUMMARY
● Hertz created a set up where he used transmitter made of two spherical
electrodes connected to an induction coil with a tiny gap between them
● Radio wave was produced when the sparks moving back and forth
through the electrodes in the transmitter causes changes in the electric
and magnetic field
● His set up was able to produce radio pulse with the same properties as
a light wave with different frequency and wavelength
