Actual nail consist of :
- NAIL BODY , NAIL ROOT AND NAIL EDGE

 Nail body
- It is the main part or the plate of the nail that is
attach to the skin at the base of the nail
 Nail root
- It is where the nail growth begins. It is embedded
underneath the skin at the base of the nail together
with the matrix.
 Nail edge
- It is the end of the nail that extends beyond the
finger tip
The structure of the nail is consist of :
- The NAIL BED, MATRIX and LUNULA
 Cuticle
- It is the overlapping skin around your nails
 Nail fold or mantle
- It is the deep fold or skin at the base of the nail where the nail root is embedded.
 Nail grooves?
- Are slits or tracks in the nail bed at the sides of the nail on which the nail grows.
 Nail wall?
- Is the skin on the sides of the nail above the grooves
 Eponychium?
- Is the thin line of skin at the base of the nail that extends from the nail wall to the nail plate
 Hyponychium?
- Is the part of the skin under the free edge of the nail
Skin surrounding the nail includes:
the CUTICLE, NAIL FOLD/ MANTLE, NAIL GROOVES, NAIL WALL,
EPONYCHIUM AND HYPONYCHIUM

 Nail bed
- It is the portion of the skin beneath the nail body that the nail plate rest upon. It is
supply with blood vessels that provide nourishment for the nail growth. It contains nerves
 Matrix
- It contains nerves together with the lymph and blood vessels that produces nail cells
and control the growth of the nails.
- It is located under the nail root.
- It is the very sensitive part of the nail and if injured will lead to irregular nail growth and
disorder
 Lunula
- It is the light colored half-moon shape at the base of the nail. This is where the matrix
connects with the nail bed.
a. ROUND - This is ideal for shorter nails. The tip is in rounded shape and
usually extend just a bit past the finger tip.

b. SQUARE- Is completely straight across the free edge with no rounding at the
outside edges. b.
c. STILETTO- The nail is brought to a sharp point at the peak,
sharper than a stiletto heel c.
 d. ALMOND- The shape is wide at the base and comes to a point at the
peak, resembling the nut .

e. SQUOVAL- Has a square free edge that is rounded off at the corner edges.

f. BALLERINA- The shape gets its name from the typical style of a coffin.
The point of the nail is flat with the edges filed into a straight line to reach the curved
base.
