The Chemical Components of
Cigarette
There are approximately 600
ingredients in cigarettes. When
burned, cigarettes create more
than 7,000 chemicals. At least
69 of these chemicals are known
to cause cancer, and many are
toxic.
Acetone
Tobacco smoke contains acetone, so
smokers inhale acetone whenever they
light up, and people breathe acetone if
they inhale second-hand smoke.

Acetic Acid
Corrosive to respiratory tract.
Ammonia
Tobacco manufacturers discovered that
adding ammonia to the cigarette
manufacturing process helped convert bound
nicotine molecules in tobacco smoke into free
nicotine molecules by raising their pH.

Arsenic
Arsenic-containing pesticides used in tobacco
farming remain in tobacco through processing
into cigarettes and are present in small
Benzene
Benzene exposure can weaken the
immune system because it also damages
white blood cells. This puts people at
risk for more infections.

Butane
Butane is used in cigarettes to keep the tip of
the cigarette burning at a high temperature. It
turns the nicotine into a vapour, which is more
easily absorbed into your blood.
Cadmium
A single cigarette typically contains 1-2
mcg of cadmium. When burned,
cadmium is present at a level of 1,000-
3,000 ppb in the smoke.
Carbon
M o n o x i d e
CO is not added to tobacco but is formed
when tobacco is burned incompletely. This
happens when there is too little oxygen
present to convert all of the carbon in the
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable
gas with a strong odor. Cigarette smoke
and e-cigarette vapor both contain
formaldehyde.

Hexamine
In cigarettes, it's the solid, sticky
substance that remains after tobacco is
burned, both in the ashtray and inside
Lead
It can damage the nervous system, impair fertility,
and lead to memory and concentration problems.
Severe lead poisoning can lead to death. Smoking
lead is particularly dangerous, because it allows the
metal to be easily absorbed into the airways.

Naphthalene
Naphthalene is made from crude oil or coal
tar. It is also produced when things burn, so
naphthalene is found in cigarette smoke, car
exhaust, and smoke from forest fires.
Methanol
Menthanol is a chemical compound that cools and
numbs the throat, so it makes the smoke seems less
harsh.

Nicotine
It is the nicotine in tobacco that is
addictive. Each cigarette contains about
10 milligrams of nicotine.
Ta r
Tar contains most of the cancer-causing and other
harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke. When
tobacco smoke is inhaled, the tar can form a sticky
layer on the inside of the lungs.

To l u e n e
Products containing toluene can produce
dangerous fumes which can cause nausea,
headaches, unconsciousness, and even death if
inhaled.
Diseases Caused by Cigarette Smoking

Smoking leads

to disease an

disability and
Lung Cancer
More people die from lung cancer than any
other type of cancer. Cigarette smoking is
the number one risk factor for lung cancer;
it's responsible for 87% of lung cancer
deaths. Your chance of still being alive five
years after being diagnosed is less than 1 in
Heart Disease
Smoking harms nearly every organ in your
body, including your heart. Smoking can
cause blockages and narrowing in your
arteries, which means less blood and
oxygen flow to your heart.
Stroke
Because smoking affects your arteries, it
can trigger stroke. A stroke happens when
the blood supply to your brain is
temporarily blocked. Brain cells are
deprived of oxygen and start to die. A
stroke can cause paralysis, slurred speech,
Diabetes
You're more likely to get type 2 diabetes if
you smoke. Additionally, smoking
increases the risk of complications once
diagnosed with diabetes, such as heart and
kidney disease, poor blood flow to legs and
feet (which leads to infections and possible
COPD (chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease)

COPD is an obstructive lung disease that makes it

hard to breathe. It causes serious long-term
disability and early death. COPD starts by making it
hard to be active, such as playing with a grandchild,
then usually gets worse, until climbing a short set of
stairs or even walking to get the mail is exhausting
or impossible.
Asthma
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that
makes it harder to move air in and out of
your lungs—otherwise known as
"breathing." Because cigarette smoke
irritates air passages, it can trigger sudden
and severe asthma attacks.
How do Smoking Affect Pregnant Women

Smoking during pregnancy

increases the risk of health
problems for developing
babies, including preterm
birth, low birth weight, and
birth defects of the mouth
and lip. Smoking during and
after pregnancy also
increases the risk of sudden
infant death syndrome
Premature, Low
Birth-Weight Babies
The effects of smoking not only impact mom's
health, but also that of her baby. Smoking while
pregnant can cause babies to be born prematurely
and/or with a low birth-weight. Babies born too
early or too small have increased risk of health
complications and even death.
