Preparing hand tools in

animation
• In traditional animation, preparation of
materials depends on the needs of the client,
layout, animation director, animator, clean-up
process, in-between process and final stage of
the production.

1. Pencil – used to rough out first key drawings,
HB or B pencil is needed for clean drawings,
while colored pencil is used for roughing out
the animation.
-there are two pencil rating systems. US
system us numerical, while European system is
based on a lettering scheme. The latter is the
one generally used by artists. In European rating
system, pencil are rated “H” for hardness, “B”
for blackness and “F” tp indicate a fine point
3. Sharpener is used to sharpen pencil’s lead any
shaving away its wooden surface.

4. Eraser is used to remove pencil markings on


the paper. It is important for an animato to have
an eraser to rub out lead cleanly. It s available in
soft plastic and rubber
5. Brush – is used to get rid of any carbon dust
or eraser crumbs
6. Masking tape – is used to secure the
animation papers or to tape down the peg bar
7. Peg bar - a peg bar is a piece of plastic, or if
you get fancy a piece of metal, that is meant to
hold your papers in place when you draw and
shoot your animation.
8. Plane mirror – is used to catch the right facial
expression of the character

9. Animation paper – usually comes in field sizes,


either 12 field or 15 field. However, A4 size is
commonly used now because it is more suitable
for most scanners
10. Animation light box – is a fundamental
element needed in animation desks. It is used to
see clearly through all the layers of drawings.
11. Animation disc – is a drawing disc placed on
a light box and used to work out camera moves
and panning walk cycles. It has tow sliding peg
bars tat are four at the top and bottom. It is
made of metal, plastic, or wood.

12. Camera rig – is made of metal frame that
holds and stabilizes the camera when being
used.
13. Camcorder – is used to record and store
images that will be imported to the computer
14. Scanner – is used as an alternative device to
a camera
15. Drawing tablet – is used for digital coloring
and drawing

16. Personal computer – used in animation for


line testing. Once completed, this is where final
coloring and shooting of the final film is done.
