CHAPTER 9 POWERPOINT I

SKELETAL
SYSTEM AND
MOVEMENT 1
2
As you go through this PowerPoint, have your notebook and textbook handy. You will be
asked to find answers in your textbook to specific questions (in blue).

**Write your answers in your notebook.

3
Functions of the Skeleton
◦ Read the first paragraph on page 150.
1. List five functions of the skeleton in
your notebook.

4
5
The Main Parts of the Skeleton

As you can see from the diagram, the

skeleton is composed of two main
parts- Axial skeleton (blue) and
Appendicular skeleton (pink)

2. Use your book to identify the parts

in each, axial and appendicular
skeletons.

6
Skull and Ribcage- PROTECTION

7
Cranium (skull)- PROTECTION

- Encloses and protects brain

- includes facial bones
- Holds teeth
- Large sockets for eyes, protection
- individual skull bones are joined together, sutures
8
Skeletal Girdles- SUPPORTS bones in limbs

Pectoral Girdle
- Scapula (shoulder blade) on top and
at the back

- Clavicle (collar bone) joined to the

sternum at the front

9
Pelvic Girdle
*Includes three bones bones fused together on each side

- Female- broader and flatter, easier for baby to come through, can expand when birthing

-protects female reproductive organs and lower parts of the abdomen

10
Vertebral column (spine)
SUPPORT body and head PROTECTS the spinal cord

11
Vertebral column (spine)
33 Bones called vertebrae
-same basic structure

-projections at front and back lock into each other

-ligaments hold vertebrae together (firmness and

flexibility)

-intervertebral discs of cartilage spread loads and

forces

-neural canal is hole where spinal cord runs through

12
13
Vertebral column (spine)
33 Bones called vertebrae

- Cervical vertebrae (Top 7 bones

found in the neck)

- Top two (atlas and axis) specially

designed to support and allow
movement of the head

14
Vertebral column (spine)
Thoracic vertebrae- next 12
Found in thorax region of body

-hollow areas to support ribs and allow for

movement while breathing

-projections (feel knobs on your backbone) gives

points for attachment of back and shoulder
muscles

15
Vertebral column (spine)
Lumbar vertebrae next 5
Found in lower back region, largest

-projections (feel knobs on your backbone) gives

points for attachment of back and shoulder
muscles

16
Vertebral column (spine)
Sacrum next 5 fused together
- Part of the pelvic girdle

Coccyx (tailbone)- last four fused bones

17
Rib cage-
-12 pairs of ribs joined to the thoracic vertebrae at the back
- all but last two ribs joined to the sternum at the front by cartilage
- last two ribs (floating ribs) not joined
- protect the vital organs of the thorax
- aid in breathing

18
Main bones of the human skeleton-

◦ Now it is time to focus on learning some of the main bones of the human
skeleton.
◦ Review the bones on page 151 of your textbook.

REVIEW QUESTIONS
◦ 3. What does the cranium protect?
◦ 4. Where are the following bones found in the body? humerus, radius,
femur, pectoral girdle, lumbar vertebra, patella
◦ 5. What are the fixed joints in the skull called?
◦ 6. What does the vertebrae protect?
◦ 7. What bone is attached to a thoracic vertebra?
◦ 8. How and why does the pelvic girdle of the male differ from the female?
◦ 9. List six functions of the skeleton, giving an example of each.

The next slides will have a specific bone shown- identify each bone.

REVIEW QUESTIONS

◦ 10. Draw a skeleton (stick figure is fine) and label the following structures. Resist the urge to
look in your textbook! See what is in your brain after the review activities you did.
