Introduction to Industrial Electronics Products, Modules

and Systems- Sensors, Input devices, Actuators, Output

devices, Opto-electronics equipment, and devices
OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, learners are expected to:

1. Explore basic concepts and principle of sensors, actuators, input and
output devices, opto-electronics equipment, and devices.
2. Classify common types of sensors, actuators, input and output devices
and opto-electronics equipment and devices.
3. Identify Fire Detection and Alarm System input and output devices.
4. Conduct check-up of industrial components and verify defects against
customers description.
1. What similarities or relationship can you find among the given
pictures below?
2. Which part can detect sound? pressures or temperatures? certain
chemicals?
Concepts and types of Sensors and Actuators, Input and Output
devices, Opto-electronics, and devices
Sensor is a device used for the conversion of physical events or
characteristics into the electrical signals. This is a hardware device
that takes the input from environment and gives to the system by
converting It while
Actuator is a device that converts the electrical signals into the
physical events or characteristics. It takes the input from the
system and gives output to the environment. Common types are
thermal sensors like thermometer, thermal actuators like bimetallic
strip, mechanical sensors like pressure sensor and mechanical
actuators like screw jack, electrical sensors like ohmmeter and
electrical actuators like electric motor.

What are Input and Output devices in Industrial electronics?

An input device responds to changes in the environment and produces a

suitable electrical signal for processing in an electronic circuit. In all input
devices, other forms of energy are transformed into electrical energy. An
output device or actuator
is the thing that is most often controlled in a control system. The two most
common types of actuators are relays and motors. There are many types
of both.
What are Opto-electronics and devices?

Optoelectronics is the communication between optics and electronics which

includes the study, design and manufacture of a hardware device that converts
electrical energy into light and light into energy through semiconductors. This
device is made from solid crystalline materials which are lighter than metals and
heavier than insulators. Common types are Photodiode, Solar Cells, Light
Emitting Diodes, Optical Fiber, Laser Diodes.

Fire Detection and Alarm System input and output devices

The fire alarm control panel responds to any of these signals by lighting up or
making noise, activating local bells or other signals, and/or sending a signal to
fire officials or a private monitoring company tasked with notifying the
authorities.
ACTIVITY 1
True or False. Tell whether the given statement describes the electronic part
and components. Write (T) if the statement is True and (F) if the statement is
False.

_____ 1. Opto-electronics is a device that converts the electrical signals into

the physical events or characteristics.
_____ 2. Output devices respond to changes in the environment and
produces a suitable electrical signal for processing in an
electronic circuit.
_____ 3. Thermometer is an example of thermal actuator.
_____ 4. Output device can also be used as actuator.
_____ 5. Input device is something that is most often controlled in a control
system.
ACTIVITY 2
Answer the ff. question based from what you have learned in the
lesson

1. Give examples of sensors or actuators, opto-electronic in

principles that you see in your house?
2. In your own opinion, what make these devices important in
industry and life?
Learning Task: Create Poster / Infographic / Video
Instructions:

1. Research using the internet or interview an industrial electrician or electronic

technician in your neighborhood on how to conduct a complete checkup of
either a sensor, actuator, input or output device and verify defects.
2. Create an infographic, poster or video (choose only one format).
● For infographic, send a 1-page digital copy
● For making poster, use 1/8 illustration board
● For video, record a 3-minute recorded demo video.
3. For submission of digital copy send this on the email address
ryan.baile@deped.gov.ph or FB via group chat EPAS12@SJNHS SHS
4.To submit posters using illustration boards, include this in the scheduled
submission of written outputs. Do not forget to indicate your Full Name, Grade
and Section at the back of the poster.
