Abstract

 Quick return mechanism features different input duration for their working and return strokes

 Here Quick return mechanism based cutting machine is introduced to cut pipes and weaker materials as
manually into four links.

 A project on QR mechanism design, within a first course on the theory of mechanisms, has been found
to be effective for exposing students to concepts of fabrication.

 This paper reviews basic QR mechanisms, presents a project problem and solution examples and
discusses the value of inclusion of such project problems within theory of mechanism courses
Introduction

 QR mechanisms feature different i/p durations for their working and return strokes.

 The time ratio (TR) of a QR mechanism is the ratio of the change in input displacement during the
working stroke to its change during the return stroke.

 Several basic types of mechanism have a QR action may perform the required task.
 Design of a mechanism, on the other hand, requires determining a mechanism to perform a desired
task.

 Synthesis of reciprocating QR device requires determination of a mechanism to produce a desired

TR and a necessary stroke

 There is not necessarily a unique mechanism design for a particular task

 The task of a QR mechanism is simple to understand. Several concepts of design and fabrication
can be illustrated by a QR mechanism project.
Working Principle

 There are three turning pairs and one sliding pair

Frame & Slotted lever

Now Frame & Crank
Crank & Slider
Now Slider & Slotted lever

 Also known as “the Inversion of the single slider crank chain mechanism”

 The slider is free and it can slide in the slotted lever

 The crank and the slotted lever is fitted to frame.

 When the power is supplied, the crack starts rotating and the motion is transmitted to the slider and it’s
fitted inside the slotted lever. Therefore, it starts oscillating.

 Then, ram moving forward and it makes an angle of beta which is noted and in the return it makes an
angle alpha which is also noted.

 So that cutting strokes takes more time than returning strokes

Working Model
Construction & Architecture

 Links used here will transmit to give forward &

backward motion.

 A CAD model was created demonstrating how this

concept would have been included in the physical
model.

 The first design involved using a bearing that would

lock in one direction and roll in another.

 This is implemented by using a platform that the

crank motor mounted on.
Applications

 Shaper

 Air Compressors

 Mechanical cutter

 Screw Press

 Power-driven saws

 Mechanical Actuators

 Revolver Mechanism
Future Scope

 Accurate instantaneous velocity measurement can be done by using precise instruments

 Comparison can be made with Whitworth quick return mechanism

 Vibration analysis can be performed

 Model can be made to achieve higher quick return ratio

 Kinematic and dynamic analysis can be performed

Advantages

Easy Process

Easily portable

Low manufacturing costs

Work Manually
Disadvantages

Unable to cut hard materials

Cutting shaw sharp should be maintained costly

Conclusion

 Having a project related to QR mechanism design and analysis is very beneficial for
students

 The experience familiarizes the students with the terminology of mechanism, with
concepts related to mechanism synthesis, with relative motion analysis, and with
technique and computer programs for the design and analysis of mechanisms.
