1. SOCIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE
Premised on the social dimension of individual life – the interactions,
relationships, and bonds formed by individuals with other individuals.
Plato conceptualized the ideal (political) community, referred to as
the polis (city-state) to be composed of various classes.

SOCIAL SCIENCE PERSPECTIVE: General Definitions
1. An informally organized social entity, characterized by a sense of
identity.
2. A group of people living in the same defined area, sharing common
basic values, organization, and interest.
3. A population which is geographically focused existing as a unique
social entity
4. A group of people with diverse characteristics, linked by social ties

2. INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVE: Communities have a mechanism for
coordinating values, goals and actions of its individual members.

Social Institutions arise from voluntary shared agreements among


individuals that generally also shaped their behavior as a collective.

2. INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVE:
Institutions are established rules that ensure the regular and
predictable behavior of actors within community

Douglass North describes institutions as the “rules of the game” that


shape a community and society in general.

2. INSTITUTIONAL PERSPECTIVE:
Institutions are categorize as FORMAL and INFORMAL
Formal Institutions are explicitly communicated, embodied in legally
codified documents or artifacts.
Informal Institutions are practices, norms, traditions, culture, conduct
and belief systems of a community

Anthropology is a social science discipline that examines human
societies.
Social Psychology refers to the branch of psychology that scientifically
studies social behavior.
Sociology a social science discipline that studies the structures,
developments and functioning of human society.
Political Science refers to the study of the activities related to the art of
governing, the management of public affairs or the creation,
preservation, amendment of the general rules.

3. CIVIL SOCIETY PERSPECTIVE:
Civil Society refers to a political community of organized groups
operating within the authoritative parameters of the state and referred
to as third sector “the Tripartite Society”.
-Non-government organizations (NGOs) and people’s organization (Pos)

4. ORGANIC PERSPECTIVE:
It refers to local or grassroots groups within a particular locale that are
driven and organized because of community issues and concerns.
Conceptualized as the formation of neighborhood organizations, rural
or urban, convened to pursue local development goals or address
particular issues.

Grassroots organizations or movements are typically composed of
volunteers from the local/community level.
