What is HEV....?
• A Hybrid vehicle is any vehicle that uses both electricity and fuel to
run .

Working principle of HEV

Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and

an electric motor, which uses energy stored in the batteries. A Hybrid
electric vehicle can’t be plugged in to charge the battery.Instead the
battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal
combustion engine. The extra power provided by the electric motor can
potentially allow for a smaller engine. The battery can also power auxiliary
loads and reduce engine Idling when stopped.Together these features
results in better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

Types of Hybridization
1)Mild/Micro Hybridization.
• They feature idle stop function.
• Regenerative braking.
• Are not capable of using the electric
motor to propel the vehicle.
• These systems are usually 42V or less.

2)Medium Hybridization

• They feature idle-stop function.

• Regenerative braking.
• Most are not capable of using the
electric motor alone to propel the vehicle.
• The electric motor usually assist the engine .

3)Full Hybridization

• They feature idle-stop function.

• Regenerative braking.
• Most are capable of using the
electric motor alone to propel the vehicle
• The electric motor also assist the engine.
• Battery voltage is about 300V to 400V.

 Advantages

• Low emissions
• Reduced noise pollution
• Low maintainance
• Safe to drive

Disadvantages
• Hybrids are more expensive than Non Hybrids.
• Slower than petrol powered cars.
• Parts are very expensive to repair.
• Somestimes they can be pretty ugly.

• All the major automobile manufacturers are working on hybrid

electric vehicles
• Heavy vehicles like trucks will be using hybrid system in future
• Price of vehicle will due to increase in production rate of hybrid
electrical vehicles.
