Introduction to HEV :

A Hybrid Electric Vehicle is a type of hybrid vehicle which combines a

conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system with an electric
propulsion system. In other words it is a type of vehicle that works on both electricity
and fuel.
Needs of HEV :

In today’s world the mankind is growing and the population is increasing rapidly
imagine in next two to four decades the worlds alternative fule sources will come to
an end some day and as we don’t have any other alternative sources so this will cause
us a huge problem
and as we all can see the rapid increase in vehicle uses that’s quite huge and day by
day it’s increasing , as the petroleum is a non renewable resource so this will vanish
in a very short period of time, that is why we need to come up with another idea of
alternative source that is the hybrid engine. Hybrid engine is eco-friendly ,suitable
and most importantly all the flaws of fuel combustion engine can be overcome by the
hybrid engines.
Reaction of INDIAN market on HEV :

The needs of HEV in Indian market is quite heavy because of the high rise of
population and due the extinction of fuel. We have the 2nd largest populated country
and we need to save our resources so we need HEV badly. Indian market is totally
waiting for the Hybrid technology .
Even government of India is promoting HEV, in past several years the decreasing
rate of normal automobiles are the proof to all of my statements. As an example the
TATA Automobile company at Jamshedpur fired several employees just because of
the decrement of the emerging sector automobile, if we will talk about employement
then also this is a very big platform for the Electrical engineers. So in a nutshell the
need of HEV is quite important in Indian market.
Basic component of a HEV :

Regardless of the type of hybrid vehicle system, the propulsion system mainly
comprises the following components: prime mover; electric motor with DC/DC
converter, DC/AC inverter, and controller; energy storage system; and transmission
system. The prime mover of a hybrid vehicle is its main energy source, which generally
is one of gasoline, diesel, or fuel cells. The electric motor is one of the most important
components in a hybrid vehicle. The energy storage system, one of the most important
subsystems in an hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), consists of an energy storage pack; a
voltage, current, and temperature measurement (VITM) module; a cell balancing circuit;
and a cooling system. In addition, battery‐related estimation algorithms play key roles.
The chapter briefly introduces some typical batteries that are used in HEVs, plug ‐in
HEVs (PHEV), and battery powered electric vehicles (BEVs). Transmission is another
important subsystem on the drivetrain.
The storage device plays a crucial role in Hybrid Engines
Lead and Nickel batteries are mostly been used in HEVs but
if in near future we can use the less toxic Lithium Ion Batteries then that
will be best. Batteries in cars are responsible for the better fuel economy that
becomes central to the technology. The battery unit powers up the speed when it is
slow and the
tank is running out of fuel and puts less effect on the tank.
Classification of HEV :

1. Parallel Hybrids : A single motor and electrical engine is

connected in parallel to give the power to drive the wheels

2. Series Hybrids : In this system type the combustion engine drives the
electric generator instead of driving the wheels directly.

3. Power-Split Hybrids : It combines both the systems Parallel and Series

hybrid systems, in this the series system is more efficient
and effective at lower speed and parallel is more efficient at higher
speed .
Key Factors of HEV :

A. Regenerative braking.

B. Engine Size .

C. Vehicle weight and aerodynamic design .

D. Electric motor Drive .

E. Automatic start and shut off .

HEV in transportation :

In Transportation sector also HEV is no more a underdog . It is used in buses and

other public transportation . This is quite cheaper than the real petroleum combustion
engine so people will prefer this economically as the prices are increasing .
Advantages :

1. Lowers the risk of Air pollution .

2. Reduces fuel consumption .
3. Gives a good Mileage to the vehicle.
4. Twice more efficient than the combustion engine with respect to speed and
energy usage .
5. Lighter batteries than other electric vehicles.
6. Regenerative braking system stores electrical energy in batteries.
7. Uses less fuel to recharge batteries.
8. Pocket friendly.
Conclusion :

The progress that the electric vehicle industry has seen in past years is commendable
and highly necessary because of the rapid increasing of global green house gas levels .
The benefits of HEV surpass the cost and it is more convenient and less costly. The
adoption of HEV in daily life is a little obstacle cause people are not that aware of this
technology so little education programs can be very helpful to promote the concept ,so
we hope that in next decade in the year of 2030 maybe time will come and vast use of
HEVs will be done then. Each person can make a difference ,so go electric and help
the world make a difference !
