A uniform ladder rests in equilibrium with one
end on a rough horizontal plane, and the other
against a smooth vertical wall. A man ascends
the ladder. Show that he cannot go more than
half way up.
• Length of ladder = L
• Weight of Ladder = WL = MLg
B Nw
• Weight of Person = WP = Mp g
• Angle with Floor = θ
• Normal forces
NF , Nw

For the sake of question we assume;

Distance man has climbed = X

X
NF
WP WL
FR
Note:
g is gravity A
 ΣFx = 0 ; FR – Nw = 0 ; FR = Nw : we know that FR = μNF
:Nw = μNF

 ΣFy = 0 ; NF – WP – WL = 0 ; NF = WP + WL

 ΣƬi = 0 ; anti clockwise moments = clockwise moments

: i is any pivot point
We assume that man is at half way of ladder;
i.e W= (ML+Mp)g
W=Mg ; where M= ML + Mp
Taking torque at A:
Nw
ΣƬA = 0;
Anticlockwise = clockwise
moment moment

L
Nw Lsinθ = W(L/2)cosθ

Lsinθ
μNFLsinθ = W(L/2)cosθ
μMgLsinθ = Mg(L/2)cosθ
μtanθ = 1/2 NF Mg
tan θ = (1/2μ)
θ

A R
tan θ = (1/2μ)
(L/2)cosθ
Now we suppose distance climbed by man is X and
calculate torque on pivot A again;
ΣƬA = 0
Anticlockwise = clockwise
moment moment
Nw Lsinθ= XcosθWP +(L/2)cosθ WL Nw
μ(WP + WL)Lsinθ= XcosθWP +(L/2)cosθ WL

Divide the equation by cosθ, and multiply by 2 it

becomes;

Lsinθ
2μ(WP + WL)Ltanθ = 2XWP +(L) WL
2μ(WP + WL)L(1/2μ) =2XWP +(L) WL

It simplifies too NF X WP WL
(WP + WL)L = 2XWP +(L) WL
θ

WPL + WLL = 2XWP +(L) WL F

A R
L = 2X
L/2= X
Xcos θ (L/2)cosθ
