The document outlines protocols for performing nerve conduction studies (NCS). It details the roles of the receptionist, technologist, and procedures. The technologist will prepare the patient, check physiological and non-physiological factors, apply electrodes according to the area being tested, and record responses. Parameters like filters, sensitivities, and stimulus durations are specified based on testing motor or sensory nerves. The technologist will stimulate the nerve and identify responses, addressing issues like obscured baselines or poorly defined waves.

RAMSHA KHURSHID TECH AKUH 06-02-2020 ROLE OF RECEPTIONIST
When the patient presents at the
reception, the receptionist should follow the procedure as mentioned in the policy of reception. ROLE OF TECHNOLOGIST Tech.will collect the request from the slot containing the processed requests for EMG/NCS or will receive the request directly from the receptionist to call the patient for test. Tech. will conform that he/she has correct patient. If not the routine test, confirm about the preparation of the test has been followed before the starting the test CONT… Tech will explain the procedure to the patient. Prior to beginning the recording technologist should complete the worksheet with data on the request and the other information required on the worksheet. ROLE OF THE TECHNOLOGIST TECH WILL CHECK THE FOLLOW BEFOR PROCEDURE Physiological factors: - Temperature - Age Non-physiological factors
- Electrode impedance and noise
- Stimulus artifact - Filters - Electrode placement - Distance between active and reference recording electrodes ElectrodeApplication: Switch on the machine select NCS on the MENU
Apply the electrode as per protocol of NC testing
depending upon physician’s request or patient history RECORDING PARAMETER For Motor Nerve Studies Filters :2-20KHz
Sensitivity:5mv
Sweep time:5ms o Stimulus duration:0.05or0.2
Stimulus Intensity: Start with Zero uV
CONT… For Sensory Nerve Studies Filter: 20-2000Hz
Sensitivity:20uV/div
Sweep time:2ms
Stimulus duration:0.05or0.2
Stimulus Intensity: Start with Zero uV
RECORDING PROCEDURE At the beginning of the recording make sure that the patient is relaxed and comfortable and let the patient knows that s/he will feel an impulse for a moment when you will stimulate the patient. Children will have been sedated if necessary TESTING Check the conditions (setting/parameter). Start stimulating by depressing the stimulus switch; increase the stimulus intensity gradually. The stimulus artifact should be noted at less than 1ms this shows that the amplifies is switch on. The shape of the potential will depend upon the nerve being tested. RESPONSE IDENTIFICATION Good technique be used during electrode placement and stimulation. A.) if stimulus artifact obscuring the base line: 1.)Reposition the stimulator or recording electrode 2.)Clean to stimulating area and rearrange the lead 3.)Repeat the trails at a lower stimulation 4.)Apply enough gel on the electrode CONT… B.) If poorly defined waves: 1.)increase the stimulus intensity and or sensitivity 2.)The muscle should twitch properly and consistently with the stimulation The End
