GRIHA - GREEN RATING FOR INTEGRATED

HABITAT ASSESSMENT
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN - VI
GRIHA?
• GRIHA IS AN ACRONYM FOR GREEN RATING FOR
INTEGRATED HABITAT ASSESSMENT
• GRIHA IS A SANSKRIT WORD MEANING – ‘ABODE’
• ATTEMPTS TO MINIMIZE A BUILDING’S RESOURCE
CONSUMPTION, WASTE GENERATION, AND OVERALL
ECOLOGICAL IMPACT TO WITHIN CERTAIN NATIONALLY
ACCEPTABLE LIMITS / BENCHMARKS.
• GRIHA IS A RATING TOOL THAT HELPS PEOPLE ASSESSES
THE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR BUILDING AGAINST
CERTAIN NATIONALLY ACCEPTABLE BENCHMARKS

Benefits of GRIHA

• Reduced energy consumption without sacrificing the comfort levels (lower operational costs)
• Reduced water consumption
• Reduced system sizes (HVAC, transformers, cabling, etc.) for optimal performance at local conditions.
• Reduced investment (lifecycle cost)
• Reduced destruction of natural areas, habitats, biodiversity, reduced soil loss from erosion etc.
• Reduced air and water pollution (with direct health benefits)
• Limited waste generation due to recycling and reuse
• Reduced pollution loads
• Increased user productivity
• Enhanced image and marketability.

Criteria and Rating Points
• GRIHA has a 100-point percentile-based rating system.
• On the submission of the required documents and upon final assessment and evaluation, the project is awarded/denied points for
all the applicable appraisals.
• Based on the percentile obtained, star rating is awarded as listed below

- 25 - 40 points is certified as a 1 star GRIHA rated building

- 41 - 55 is a 2 star GRIHA rated building

- 56 - 70 is a 3 star GRIHA rating building

- 71 - 85 is a 4 star GRIHA rated building

- Above 85 is a 5 star GRIHA rated building
