OBJECTIVES
To be able to know and understand the:

1. Types and classifications of solid wastes

2. Proper management of solid wastes from
generation to disposal
3. Cause and effect of improper management of
solid wastes
WHAT IS WASTE?
Any material, substance, or byproduct eliminated or discarded
as no longer useful or required after the completion of a
process

RA 9003 – Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000
An act providing for an ecological solid waste management
program, creating the necessary institutional mechanisms and
incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited and providing penalties,
appropriating funds therefor, and for other purposes.

Solid waste management - refer to the discipline associated with

the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and
transport, processing, and disposal of solid wastes in a manner
that is in accord with the best principles of public health,
economics, engineering, conservation, aesthetics, and other
environmental considerations

SEPARATE COLLECTION

Separate day
collection of
different wastes
ESTABLISHMENT OF MATERIALS
RECOVERY FACILITY/SYSTEM
 Designed to receive, (MRF/S)
sort,
process, and store
compostable and recyclable
material efficiently and in
environmentally sound
manner

 Compartmentalized and
labeled according to specific
classification of waste.
WASTE DIVERSION
WASTE DIVERSION = Volume of Compost + Recyclables + Others
× 100
Estimated Waste Generation (EWG) per Quarter

EWG = Per Capita of LGU × Brgy Population × No. of Days in a Quarter

 The LGU shall divert solid waste from waste disposal facilities
through re-use, recycling, and composting activities and other
resource recovery activities.
