1. JK throws a ball horizontally from the roof of a building with an
initial velocity of 64.8 km/hr. It hits the ground at a point 62 m
from the edge of the building. Solve for the time of flight and find
the height of the building.
2. A pool ball leaves a 0.0006 kilometer high table with an initial
horizontal velocity of 2.4 m/s. Compute the time required for the
pool ball to fall to the ground and the horizontal distance
between the table's edge and the ball's landing location.
3. A cannon on a pirate ship was fired at an angle of 30
degrees, and the cannon ball came out of the cannon at 40 m/s.
Assuming we can neglect air resistance and that acceleration is
constant due to gravity, how high it goes and how far did it land
in the water?
4. A projectile shot an angle of 50 degrees above the horizontal
struck a building 50 meters at a point 28 meters above the point
of projection. Find the initial velocity and how many seconds did
it take to hit the building?
Free-body
diagram
Free-body diagrams are diagrams used to show the
relative magnitude and direction of all forces
acting upon an object in a given situation.
FIRST CASE: FREE BODY DIAGRAM
A horizontal surface with a box on the surface and
the box is at rest.

Fn = mg
mg = W
W = Fn
∑Fy = +Fn – W
SECOND CASE: FREE BODY DIAGRAM
If we have a horizontal surface and a person is trying to
push a box meaning the person is applying a force. Since
the box is in an rough carpet, friction is present.
y-direction x-direction
∑Fy = Fn – W ∑Fx = F – Fs
may = Fn – W max = F – Fs

Fs = µsFn
Fk = µkFn
EXAMPLE
#1
A 10 kg wood crate is being pushed across a wooden floor
with a horizontal force of 350 N. What is the net force acting
on the crate given the coefficient of friction, µk between the
crate and the wooden floor to be 0.3?
GIVEN:
m = 10 kg Fx = 350 N
g = 9.8 m/s² µk = 0.3 Fnet = ?

FORMULA:
Fn = W W = mg
Fk = µkFn Fnet = Fx – Fk
GIVEN:
m = 10 kg
Fx = 350 N
g = 9.8 m/s²
µk = 0.3
Fnet = ?
SOLUTION:
W = mg
W = (10 kg) (9.8 m/s²)
= 98 N

Fk = µkFn
= (0.3) (98 N)
=29.4 N

Fnet = Fx - Fk
= 350 N – 29.4 N
=320.6 N
THIRD CASE: FREE BODY DIAGRAM
a. Let’s say we have a flat horizontal surface and once again we have a box on
the surface and this time the box is being pulled towards 30˚ to the right
with a rope so this is a tension force and let’s say that there is some friction
between the box and the surface which is the kinetic friction opposing the
motion.

#2
Meredith Gray is applying 38 N force to a 3 kg mini cabinet at an
angle of 29 degrees. If the coefficient friction is 0.50, what is the net
force and the acceleration?
GIVEN:
m = 3 kg Fx = 350 N Fnet = ?
g = 9.8 m/s² µf = 0.50 acceleration = ?

FORMULA:
Fn = W W = mg
Ff = µfFn Fnet = Tx - Ff
∑Fy = Fn + Ty -W

Fn = W- Ty

∑Fx = Tx –
Fn

GIVEN:
m = 3 kg
FA = 38 N sin(29))
g = 9.8 m/s² =27.75 N
µf = 0.50
Fnet = ?
acceleration = ?
THIRD CASE: FREE BODY DIAGRAM
b. Let’s say we have a box sliding down an inclined plane
with an angle of 30˚.

EXAMPLE
#3
A 10 kg rest on 30° incline and begins to slide down (a)
what is the acceleration if there is no friction present?
(b) what is the acceleration if the coefficient of kinetic
friction is 0.20?
GIVEN:
m = 10 kg ϴ = 30 °
g = 9.8 m/s² µk = 0.20

FORMULA:
Fn = W W = mg
Fk = µkFn Fnet = Fg – Fk
 SOLUTION:

∑Fx = Fg
ma = mg sin ϴ
ax = (9.8 m/s²) (sin 30°)
= 4.9 m/s²

∑Fx = Fg – Fk
∑Fx = Fg – Fn
ma = mg sin ϴ - mg cos ϴ
ma = mg (sin ϴ - cos ϴ)
a = (9.8 m/s²) ((sin 30° – (0.20) (cos 30°))
= 3.2 m/s²
SOLUTION:
Given:
Mass = 750 kg
Initial velocity = 40 m/s
F = 2300 N
Final velocity = 0 m/s

a = F/m
=2300 N/750 kg
= - 3.07 m/s^2
T = vf – Vi/acceleration
= 0 m/s – 40 m/s/-3.07m/s^2
= 13.03 s

d = vi(t)+0.5 (a) (t^2)

= 40 m/s (13.03)+ 0.5 (-3.07)(13.03^2)
=260.59

Vf^2 = vi^2+2(a)(d)
D = vi^2- vf^2/-2a
Let’s recall your
formulas!
EXAMPLE
#4
A 15 kg box rest on a frictionless horizontal
surface attached to a 5 kg box as shown below (a)
what is the acceleration of the system? (b) what is
the tension in the rope?
GIVEN:
m1 = 15 kg m2 = 5 kg
g = 9.8 m/s²
FORMULA:
a = =

Fnet=

SOLUTION:

a =
a=
a=
= (5 kg) ( 9.8 m/s²) / (15 kg + 5 kg)
= 49N/20kg
= 2.45 m/s²

= a
= (15 kg) (2.45 m/s²)
= 36.75 N
SOLUTION:

Fnet=
= 5 kg (9.8 m/s²) – 36.75 N
= 12.25 N
