• Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character created
in 1928 in the Walt Disney animation studio,
which serves as a Disney mascot. An
anthropomorphic mouse who usually wears
red shorts, big yellow shoes and white gloves,
Mickey is one of the most recognizable
fictional characters in the world.
• Mickey Mouse was created as a replacement for
the previous Disney character, Oswald the Happy
Rabbit.
• Oswald The Happy Rabbit is a cartoon character
created in 1927 by Walt Disney. He starred in
several short animated films released in theaters
from 1927 to 1938. 27 animated short Oswalds
were produced at Walt Disney Studios.
• Walt Disney was born on December 5,
1901. He is the fourth son of Elijah
Disney and Flora Disney. At the age of
16, Wald attended McKinley High School,
where he would become a young art
editor at another newspaper school. Two
years later he was hired as a commercial
artist at the Priman-Rubin studio in
Kansas City, where he met artist Ubbe
Iverks.
• in early 1925, Disney relocated the growing staff to a one-story, plaster building and renamed it
the Walt Disney Studio. Disney hired Lillian Bunds, ink and she started dating her.
• Meanwhile, Margaret Winkler also got married, and her new husband, Charles Mintz, took over
his cartoon distribution business. In 1927, Mintz asked Disney to compete in the popular Felix
Cat series. Mintz proposed the name "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit", and Disney created the
character and made the series.
• In 1928, as costs skyrocketed, Disney and Lillian took a train to New York to renegotiate a deal
for the popular Oswald series. Mintz objected with even less money than he was currently
paying, informing Disney that he owned the rights to Oswald Lucky Rabbit and that he had
attracted most of Disney's animators to come and work for him.
• Shocked, shaken and saddened, Disney boarded a train for a long ride back. Depressed, he
sketched a character and named him Mortimer Mouse. Lillian suggested the name Mickey
Mouse instead of a more vivid name.
• Back in Los Angeles, Disney, with Mickey Mouse copyright and Iverx, created new cartoons with
Mickey Mouse as the star. Without a distributor, however, Disney could not sell Mickey Mouse
silent cartoons.
• Mickey generally appears alongside his girlfriend
Minnie Mouse, his pet dog Pluto, his friends Donald
Duck and Goofy and his nemesis Pete, among
others. Although initially characterized as a brazenly
cute fake, Mickey eventually rebranded himself as a
handsome boy, usually considered an honest and
strong hero. In 2009, Disney began rebranding the
character again with a lesser emphasis on his
friendly, well-meaning personality and introducing
more threatening and stubborn aspects of his
personality, starting with the Epic Mickey video game.
