METALS AND

NON-METALS
DO YOU
REMEMBER?
1 If you place a knife under the heat of the sun, what
does it look like?
2 If you try to bend the lead of a pencil, what would
happen?

3 What are wires usually made of?

4 What are electrical wires made of?

THINKING TIME
1 Why do you think some electrical wires are made of
copper?

2 Why does the casing of the lead in a pencil made of

wood?

DISCUSSION
Materials can be classified as Metals or Non-metals.

There are many LUSTER

characteristics that will
enable us to classify a DUCTILITY
material as Metal or Non-
metal. MALLEABILITY

CONDUCTIVITY
LUSTER
the ability of the material
to reflect light

Is the material shiny?

Metals are SHINY.

DUCTILITY
capability of the material to be
stretched without being
damaged
Can the material bend?

Metals are bendable.

Non- Metals are will break when

bended far from its capacity.
MALLEABILI
TY
capability of the material to be
compressed without being
damaged
Can the material pounded
without being crushed?

Non- Metals are brittle.

CONDUCTIVI
TY
ability of the materials to transmit
heat or electricity

Can the material carry

electricity or heat?

Metals are good conductors.

Non-Metals are poor conductors.

SUMMARY
Characteristics Metals Non-metals
Luster Good reflectors of Poor reflectors of
light; Shiny materials light
Malleability Malleable Brittle

Ductility Ductile Not ductile

Conductivity Good conductors Poor conductors

Location in the Periodic Table
Most metals are located on the left
side of The Periodic Table except for
Hydrogen.

Most non-metals are located on the

right side of The Periodic Table.
How are metals and non-metals
relevant in our lives?
1 Why do you think some electrical wires are made of
copper?

Copper is a metal that can be made into wires

without breaking and can transmit electricity
form one area to another.
How are metals and non-metals
relevant in our lives?
2 Why does the casing of the lead in a pencil made of
wood?

The lead of a pencil is made of graphite.

Graphite is made of Carbon. Carbon is a non-
metal that is brittle. Wood is used because soft
enough to protect the brittle lead of the pencil.

Short Quiz
1-2. Write a sentence that describes at least two characteristics of Metals.
3-4. Write a sentence that describes at least two characteristics of Non-Metals.
5. Where on the Periodic Table can you find most of the metals?
6. Where on the Periodic Table can you find most of the non-metals?

7-8. Give at least two ideas where you can show the importance of metals.
