DAY 4

ACTIVITY 4: “WHAT HAPPENS TO

THE SOLID MATERIALS WHEN
HAMMERED?”
Objective:
Describe what happens to the solid
materials when they are hammered.
What do you know about a
hammer?
Considering your responses,
we could say that a hammer is
a hand tool which consists of a
solid head held on the end of a
handle. It is used for
beating/striking or pounding
materials/ objects.
If solid materials are
hammered, what do you think
will happen to the materials?
Today, you will do an activity
that will help you understand
what happens to solid materials
when they are hammered.
LM, ACTIVITY 4, P.
35-36
What you need
•1 pc of wood
•Empty tin can
•Sheet of galvanized iron
•Hollow block
What to do?

1. Hammer each of the given

materials. Observe what
happens.
2. Record your observations.
Material Observation

Block of wood

Empty tin can (lata)

Piece of hollow block

Sheet of galvanized iron

Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the solid
materials when they were
hammered?
2. Was a new material formed when
solid material was hammered?
3. What characteristics of solid
were evident in this experiment?
Give situations where hammering
is applied.
What happened to the solid
materials when they were
hammered?
REMEMBER THESE:
• Solid materials can be hammered
depending on their composition.
When hammered, these materials
may change their size and shape,
and even the texture. However,
no new material is formed
because only the physical
appearance of the material is
Describe what changes happened to
solid materials as they are hammered.

1. wood 3. glass bottle

2. Stone 4. egg shell

5. steel bar
ASSINGMENT:

Each group will bring the following

materials for tomorrow:
1 pc. Used paper ( any kind of paper)
2 pcs. Candy wrapper
1 pc. Small cardboard ( any carton)
2 pcs. Leaves
1 pc. Used cloth (any kind of cloth)
1 pair scissors
DAY 5
ACTIVITY 5: “What Happens to the
Solid Materials when Cut?”
Objective:
Describe what happens to the
solid materials when they are
cut
Engagement:
1. Divide the class into small groups.
2. List down solid materials that can
be cut. Do this in three minutes.
3. Present a graphic organizer for
their answers.

Do you think these solid
materials can be cut?
What do you think will
happen to the solid
materials when cut?... Let’s
investigate this in the next
activity?
LM, ACTIVITY 5
“What Happens to the
Solid Materials when
Cut?”
What to do:
1. Using a pair of scissors, cut each of the given materials.
Observe what happens to the material.
2. Record your observations in your activity sheet.

Material What happened to the

material when cut?
piece of paper
Piece of cardboard
Candy wrapper
leaves
Piece of cloth
Guide Questions:
1. What happened to the solid
materials when they are cut?

2. Was a new material formed

when solid material was cut ?
REMEMBER THESE:
• Solid materials can be cut.
When cut, these materials may
change their size and shape,
but no new material is formed.
Hence, only the physical
appearance of the solid
material is changed when cut.
• Not all solid materials can be
cut using simple scissors.
Some solid materials like
iron steel, etc., can be cut
using sophisticated cutters
(i.e. metal cutter/ machine
cutters)
Valuing:
If you were the worker who is
using metal cutters, how can you
protect yourself from danger/
accident considering the fact
that the edges of sheet metal are
razor sharp?
