WORKSHEET IN SCIENCE 4
LESSON 2: Changes that Materials Undergo WEEK # 2
I. TARGET TASKS:
Describe changes in solid materials when they are bent, pressed,
hammered, or cut.
II. LET’S STUDY!

What happens to the solid materials when bent?

Solid materials can be bent. Bent means to force and shape into
curve or angle. The material when bent may change its shape and
size. There is no new material that is formed after bending. Clearly,
only the physical appearance of the materials is changed.

What happens to the solid materials when pressed?

Some solid material can be pressed depending on its property.
Press is applying pressure to flatten and shape an object. When
solid materials are pressed, they may change their size and shape
while other solid materials may also change their texture when
pressed. No new material is formed because only the physical
appearance of the material is changed.

What happens to the solid materials when hammered?

Solid materials can be hammered depending on their composition.
Hammer is a tool used for beating, striking or pounding objects.
When solid materials are hammered, they may change their size,
shape, or texture. However, no new material is formed because only
the physical appearance of the material is changed.

What happens to the solid materials when cut?

Cut is an action of dividing object by using sharp edge object. When
solid materials are cut, these materials may change their size and
shape, but no new material is formed. Hence, only the physical
appearance of the solid material is changed when cut.

Physical Change is a change in which no new substance is formed.

Some physical changes include shape, size, color, texture.
III. LET’S DO THIS!

A. ACTIVITY 1: Changes that Solid Material Undergo when Bent

Materials: soft plastic ruler, soft metal spoon, paper clip
1. Bend each of the given materials. Observe and describe what
happens to each material.
2. Record your observations in the table.

3. paper clip

B. ACTIVITY 2: Changes that Solid Material Undergo when Pressed

Materials: pandesal, modelling clay
1. Using a piece of wood, empty glass bottle, or large stone, press
each of the given materials. Observe and describe what happens to
each material.
2. Record your observations in the table.

1. pandesal
2. modelling

C. ACTIVITY 3:Changes that Solid Material Undergo when Hammered

Materials: block of wood, empty tin can, hammer
1. Hammer each of the materials. Observe and describe what
happens to each material.
2. Record your observations in the table.
Material What happened to the material when hammered?
1. block of wood
2. empty tin can

D. ACTIVITY 4: Changes that Solid Material Undergo when Cut

Materials: piece of paper, leaves, candy wrapper
1. Using pair of scissors, cut each of the materials. Observe and
describe what happens to each material.
2. Record your observations in the table.
Material What happened to the material when cut?
1. paper
2. leaves
3. candy wrapper

Guide questions:
1. What happened to the solid materials when they are bent,
pressed, hammered and cut?
2. Were new materials formed when the materials were bent,
pressed, hammered and cut?
3. What characteristics of solid were evident in this experiment?
IV. REMEMBER!
 Solid material can be changed through many ways: by cutting,
tearing, folding, twisting, bending, stretching, pressing,
hammering or crumpling. Such action/s may change the
material’s size, shape, or texture; however, no new material is
formed because only the physical appearance of the solid

material is changed.
V. ANSWER THIS!

A. True or false.
1. Physical Change is a change in which new substance is formed.
2. All solid materials can be bent.
3. When a solid object is hammered, its physical appearance is only
changed.
4. When a paper is cut, only its shape may change.
5. Not all solid materials can be cut using simple scissors.
