Materials

Changes in Size
and Shape .
LET’S TRY
Directions: Identify which of
the following activities undergo
physical or chemical change. Put
a check () in the proper
column, then discuss your
reason in the last column.
Type of Change

Activity Physical Chemical Reason
1. Stretched rubber     Change in shape
band  of the rubber
band
2. aluminum foil
torn into pieces
3. carrots chopped
into small pieces
4. burning of paper
and log of wood
5. ripe guava fruit
Identify if the following materials undergo
decay. or not.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.
OBSERVE
Observe the following materials. Group them as
soft or hard, and metal or non metal.
Find out the materials change in size and shape
without producing new materials.
Name of Ways of Changing Size and Shape
Materials (Bending, Pressing, Hammering, Cutting)

Materials may undergo two types of
changes
PHYSICAL CHANGE
 Any material that can change their
characteristics without changing their
chemical composition.
Materials may undergo two types
of changes
CHEMICAL CHANGE
Any material where new
substances are formed.
Metals have more
compact molecules
with a definite size and
cannot break easily.
Malleability

 The ability of metals to be

hammered into flat thin sheets.
Iron
silver
gold
Ductility
 The ability of a material to have its
shape changed without breaking or
losing its strength.
tungsten
Copper
Brittleness

 The ability of materials to be easily

broken, cracked or snapped.
Solid materials can be changed in
different ways. We can change the size,
shape, or form of a solid material by
cutting, tearing, folding, twisting,
bending, stretching, pressing, crumpling,
and others.
You are fond of planting flowers
but suddenly you broke the pot,
you don’t have any spare to
use. You roam around and saw
a metal wire. How are you
going to use the metal wire?
Materials undergo changes in size and
shape. Solids that can change without
changing their chemical composition is
what we call physical change. Solids that
forms new substance is what we call
chemical change.

Write the letter of the
correct answer.
2. Which of the following is an example
of physical change?

3. Describe what happened to the watermelon.

A. The watermelon changed its size and shape after it

was pressed.
B. The watermelon changed its volume and shape after it
was cut.
C. The watermelon changed its size and odor after it was
hammered.
D. The watermelon changed its size and shape after it
was chopped.
Write the letter of the correct answer.
4. What properties of materials
are common among gold, silver,
and iron?
a. malleability c. brittleness
