 Horizontal form that contains 2 or


more divisions of dwelling units with
more emphasis on the horizontal
circulation.
The Tower
 Vertical form that contains all the
dwelling units with more emphasis
on the vertical circulation

Tower with a base

 The vertical form of the tower is


combined with a base. The roof of the
podium can also serve as a garden for
the residents.
Courtyard Apartments
 The courtyard is a shared space
between the residents .It provides a
good communal environment that can
be enhanced with landscaping.

Individual Access Apartments

 The residents can enter directly into their


dwelling units. It offers more privacy but
lacks a communal experience.

Vertical Access Apartments


 It also provides more privacy and
individuality to the users. The vertical
core offers good light ,ventilation and also
serves as a communal area for the users.

Single loaded Corridor Access
 The dwelling units are placed on one side
of the corridor while the other side is
adjacent to an open space or courtyard.
 It offers better light and ventilation.

Double-loaded Corridor Access


 It is much more efficient in terms of

circulation and density but does not


offer good light and ventilation.
 It is not a preferred method of access.

Single Aspect Apartments
 This type contains 3 enclosed sides while
having the entrance side open. It only
offers a view to the exterior space from one
side of the apartment.

Double Aspect Apartments


 This type is more efficient due to its ability
to stack several dwelling units next to each
other. In this type 2 sides of the dwelling
unit are enclosed.

Corner Aspect Apartments

 This type offers views on 3 sides of


the dwelling unit because it is placed
on the corner of the building. This
type may not be consistently
executed throughout.

Structural Systems
Wooden Frame Structure

 Construction cost is relatively low and


also the structure can be erected very
quickly but it is flammable and can
undergo degradation.
Light Gauge Steel Structure

 It is flame resistant and the structure


can be erected quickly. Less common
cutting and fastening tools are
required. Direct exposure to heat can
lead to loss of strength.

Load Bearing Concrete Structure

 Materials are readily available and also


construction can be carried out much
quickly but it is labour intensive.

Steel Frame Structure


 High weight to strength ratio, flexible,
and easily assembled. It loses strength
in higher temperatures and prone to
corrosion in high humidity
environments.

Reinforced Cement Concrete Structure

 Materials are readily available and


concrete can be formed in different
shapes but it takes time to attain
maximum strength.
Precast Structure
 Construction can be done quickly and
the components are engineered to
handle all the loads. Designs are
limited due to the readily available
square and rectangular shapes.
