Lateral and Creative Thinking
• Lateral and creative thinking work hand-in-hand with critical thinking
as we solve problems.
• Lateral thinking offers a somewhat structured way to generate new
ideas, while creative thinking opens the door to all possibilities.
• While critical thinking is needed in identifying and starting to solve
problems, lateral and creative thinking help generate multiple,
different, and often unexpected solutions.

3
Lateral and Creative Thinking
• Lateral thinking is also different from divergent thinking, though again
there is some overlap. Divergent thinking is only part of the process of
lateral thinking.
• Lateral thinking is not just concerned with generating alternatives but
with changing patterns, with switching to new and better patterns.
The end product of lateral thinking is insight, not multiplicity of
alternatives.

How to improve your lateral thinking skills

Improving these skills can be challenging as lateral thinking comes more

naturally to some people than others. However, like everything else,
practice makes perfect, and setting yourself lateral thinking examples
can help.

2. Reverse Thinking
• Reverse thinking involves analysing what people normally do in a situation and then doing the
opposite. If you find yourself only getting so far into a problem and them becoming stuck, you
might want to start at the end and work backwards.
