What is engineering Utilities 2 all about?

• The course focuses on the mechanical systems, fire

protection systems, sanitary/plumbing systems, and
acoustics in buildings. Lecture discussions include
HVAC systems, acoustics, vertical transportation and
fire protection.
Mechanical system

• Building mechanical systems exist to provide an

environment that protects the building structure, creates
safe and healthy surroundings for the occupants, and
allows equipment that is housed within the facility to
operate properly.
Fire protection systems

• Fire-protection and life safety systems include building exit

systems, fire-alarm systems, and fire-suppression systems.
• Fire protection involves the installation and use of structural
and operational systems to minimize the impact of fire on
people and property.
• Fire-protection systems fall into two main categories —
passive fire protection and active fire protection.
Sanitary/Plumbing Systems

• Plumbing and sanitary system is an essential part of the

construction. This system needs to be designed and properly
planned as it ensures that hygiene is maintained in the house,
office or any structure being built. It is believed that around 8%
of the construction cost of a building is allotted for plumbing
and sanitary work.
Acoustics
• Acoustics is the science of controlling noise in buildings. This includes the
minimisation of noise transmission from one space to another and the
control of the characteristics of sound within spaces themselves.
• Building acoustics are an important consideration in the design, operation
and construction of most buildings, and can have a significant impact on
health and wellbeing, communication and productivity. They can be
particularly significant in spaces such as concert halls, recording studios,
lecture theatres, and so on, where the quality of sound and its intelligibility
are very important.
HVAC System

• HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. This system provides heating and cooling to
residential and commercial buildings
• You can find HVAC systems anywhere from single-family homes to submarines where they provide the
means for environmental comfort. Becoming more and more popular in new construction, these systems
use fresh air from outdoors to provide high indoor air quality. The V in HVAC, or ventilation, is the process
of replacing or exchanging air within a space. This provides a better quality of air indoors and involves the
removal of moisture, smoke, odors, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, carbon dioxide, and other gases as well as
temperature control and oxygen replenishment.
