WHAT ARE GATEWAY DRUGS?
• These are substances have certain
restrictions including age of the user.
• Tobacco, Alcohol, and marijuana are
substances generally considered to be
gateway drugs.
• These can cause potential harm, have high
addictive properties, which include cocaine,
lysergic acid diethylamide, and heroin.
REASONS FOR THE USE OF GATEWAY DRUGS

• Alcohol is a central nervous system


depressant used for its intoxicating effects.
• It is capable of causing overdose and
physical addiction that may give side effects
of liver damage, heart disease, and
increased risk of several types of cancer.

• Tobacco, on the other hand, is an addictive,


carcinogenic substance with stimulating
properties making it one of the hardest drug
to quit and it is a mood-altering substance.
• The health risks of tobacco abuses are
emphysema, heart disease, and cancer of
the lungs, pancreas, breast, and esophagus.

• People take drugs because they have


problems.
This is a misconception because most
people take drugs because they want to be
relieved from pain and disease. Others take
drugs because they enjoy the effect of alcohol
and caffeine.

• People who use caffeine, tobacco, and or


alcohol are not drug users.
This is untrue because they are certainly
drug users since these three substances are
drugs and may cause death if abused.

• Drugs are cool


• Drug means glamorous company
• Drug users think they are powerful
• Drug users get special attention

• There are 1.1 billion smokers in the whole world and
7.7 million smoke-related death.
• Tobacco is a dried leaf of several species of
nicotine, the main content of cigarettes and it
contains dangerous substances.
• Nicotine a poison that affects human being’s
function immediately and constrict the
cardiovascular system. It destroys Vitamin C and is
an addictive drug.

• Tar a carcinogen that can cause cancer.
When tobacco is burnt, the thick, brown, and
sticky substance tar is produced
• Carbon monoxide a dangerous gas that
interferes with the blood’s ability to carry
oxygen.

• Emphysema – destroy the breathing
mechanism of a person smoking.
• Cancer of the lungs, bladder, pancreas,
mouth, larynx, and esophagus
• Coronary heart disease

• Secondhand smoke affects non-smokers
• Secondhand smoke contains more nicotine,
tar, and cadmium
• Lung illness are twice as common to
smokers that children
• Teenage smoking is on smoking

• Inhalants are substances that give off


psychoactive chemical vapors or fumes that
can be inhaled into the lungs and affect the
way brain works.
• These are toxic chemical vapors.

• Alcohol is a depressant derived from a


fermented natural sugar in fruits, vegetables,
and grains.
• These are brewed and distilled into a wide range
of beverages with various alcohol contents.
• Alcohol drinking is risky whether in a small or big
doses.

• Approximately, 5000 people under the age of


21 die of underage drinking.
Policies and Laws Related to Gateway Drugs

• Increasing taxes on alcohol beverages.


• Limiting or reducing the number of sales outlets.
• Limiting the alcohol content of drinks.
• Prohibiting or limiting advertising on these drugs.
• Limiting the sale of alcohol beverages to people
of specific age.
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 9211
• Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003
• It regulates the packaging, use, sale,
distribution, and advertisements of tobacco
products.
• It restricts and prohibits smoking in many
public places.
• It established requirement of warning labels.
