BASIC POSITIONS IN

FOLKDANCE
A balanced program in
physical education does not
include sports and physical fitness
but also rhythmic and dace
activities. Dance activities provide
a unique rhythmic experience to
an individual.
In dance, one of the first things you
need to master is the five basic positions
for arms and feet which are simply
known as first, second, third, fourth and
fifth. All basic moves start from and end
in one position of these five positions or a
slight variation thereof. In fact, dance
classes of all disciplines teach the five
positions before moving on to more
complicated steps.
First Position

With palms facing inward,

curve the arms in front just
about waist level. Heels
together, toes pointed out
from each other.
FIRST POSITION
Second Position
Arms sideward, slightly below
shoulder level and slightly flexed
at the elbow. Fingers are relaxed,
with the thumb and middle
fingers toward each other. With
heels about one foot apart, toes
pointed away from each other.
SECOND POSITION
Third Position

Raise one arm up over head,

slightly in front of the body
while the other arm remains
in second position. Place heel
of the forward foot at the in
step of the rear foot.
THIRD POSITION
Fourth Position
From the third position, move the
arm from the sideward position
in front as in the first position.
From the third position, move the
forward foot about 10o forward
with the heel of the forward foot
in line with the toes of the rear
foot.
FOURTH POSITION
Fifth Position
Raise both arms upward over the
head curved in an oval a little in
front, palms facing downward.
From the fourth position, bring
the forward heel close to the
toes of the rear foot.
FIFTH POSITION
