Past Tense

Past Tense
● A verb tense used to express an action or state having
already taken place or existed.
● A verb that refers to past time is said to be in the
Past Tense.
SIMPLE PAST TENSE
Example:
I wrote
I spoke
It rained
She cooked
The words in red colour state the verb in past tense.

There are four past tense

Simple Past Tense
Simple Past Tense expresses an action in the past
taking place.
Example: I studied for 2 hours.
She danced on the stage.
They drove the car.
He began to fight.
Here we use
Subject + V + ed (V2) + Object
Past Continuous Tense
It describes actions or events in a time before now,
which began in the past and were still going on when
another event occurred.
Example: I was studying in the afternoon.
She was cooking in the kitchen.
They were playing on the ground in the morning.
It was climbing the tree.
Here we use
Subject + V2 + ing + object
Past Perfect Tense
The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before
now. It is used to make it clear that one event
happened before another in the past.
Example: He had shut the door.
She had watched T.V.
She had not started the work.
They had gone to movie that night.
Here we use
Subject + helping verb + V3(past participle) + Object
Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Shows that an action that started in the past
continued up until another time in the past.
Example: I had been playing video games for 2
hours.
She had been working for 3 days.
They had been speaking for long time.
He had been doing a job at young age.
Here we use
Subject + had + been + V-ing
Uses of the tenses
Simple Past Tense
Use to talk about:
1. Actions finished in the past
2. talk about actions or situations in the
past.
Subject + Verb 2 (V2) + Object
Past Continuous Tense
Used to:
show that an ongoing past action was
happening at a specific moment of
interruption, or that two ongoing actions
were happening at the same time.

Subject + BE ( was / were ) + NOT +


Verb-ING
Past Perfect Tense
Used to:
make it clear that one event happened
before another in the past.

Subject + HAD ( auxilary verb- have ) + V3


( third form of main verb – past participle )
Past Perfect Continuous Tense
Used to:
talk about events which started before a time
in the past and which finished, but where the
effects or results were still important at a
point in the past

had been + the verb's present participle (root


+ -ing).
